Plateau Piknic

By JACK OATMON

Here comes le Saint Jean, here come the street sales, onward goes Fringe and onward goes the midsummer’s bender! Tonight, June 18, head up to Zoobizarre and check out tragically underrated local experimental phenomenon the Unireverse, whose hardware-tweaking, operatic synth-prog blasted my brains out at Pop last year. They’re seriously one of the best local live electronic outfits.

Friday night at Foufounes Électriques, Fake Blood, the U.K.’s current flavour-of-the-month DJ/remixer, shall deal out steady banging, pop-jumbling cheesiness, fad-chasing mash-ups, dance punk, electro 2.0 and other such fun, unpretentious and idiotic beats.

On Friday afternoon from 2–6 p.m., Piknic Électronik has its first true outing on the Plateau, visiting the street sales at Parc des Amériques on St-Laurent, finally exposing all the timid indie rockers and strip-bound fashion victims to the undeniable beauty of outdoor daytime raving, khaki cargo shorts and visor-wearing stoners. That’s with Archibald Singleton, Funky Falz and Tony the Tiger on the decks. A possible prelude to some sort of upcoming Tam Tams vs. Piknic death-match battle on the Main, pitting dreadlock against pattern baldness, bong and bongo against energy drink and subwoofer, settling once and for all which is the better Sunday afternoon hangover solution? Probably not. But we can dream!

Pop will also be hitting Parc des Amériques for their usual beer-swilling Fringe afternoons, while Peer Pressure has its second block party on Saturday at des Pins and St-Laurent, featuring resident crew members A-Rock and Hatchmatik as well as Duvall, Speakerbruiser and others.

Later that night, lesbians fashionable and sociable alike, dirty dancers and discotheque dilettantes note that a new, revamped version of Men (ex-Le Tigre) will be performing live at la Sala Rossa for the Fringe edition of Meow Mix, joined by Rae Spoon, Rainbow Pony, Sir Clement and more.
