The Mirror

The Load-Down

Apparently, Web 3.0 is going to happen soon, and the person who’s going to bring it to you is Snoop Dogg. According to a press release, Snoop is partnering with exploretalent.com in order to “co-create” a social networking “experiment,” which I would bet means there is not any kind of clear plan. A quick visit to the site makes me think the whole thing is more like Web 1.0—an electronic version of newspaper ads. People put up little auditions of themselves and troll for gigs (or wait to be “found,” I suppose). Imagine like a way bigger and shittier version of the “gigs” section of Craigslist, with pictures. If you’re into hyperbole, the owner of the site offers this: “I will say that the music, film, television and Internet communities will never be the same.” If you’re into Snoop Dogg, you can watch him explain the whole thing at tinyurl.com/da7d3r.

If you’re into stuff that’s actually good, check out this new track from Jay Reatard, “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me,” the first single from his Matador debut Watch Me Fall, coming out in August, at tinyurl.com/nkfece. The Raveonettes are going all 3.0 as well by releasing studio demos from their forthcoming record on Twitter. You can get the demo for one called “Last Dance” at tinyurl.com/lh98nk. If you’re interested in more, you can get some, but not before you sign up at Viceland (tinyurl.com/kta7dj).

Finally, Trent Reznor has announced he is leaving the social networks for a while, after a great run. In a long post on the NIN forums, which you can read at tinyurl.com/l7el5u, he pretty much sums up the music industry’s problem: “The reason no record label knows how to market anything to new media is they don’t live there... What you’ve seen happen with the marketing and presentation of NIN over the last years is a direct result of living next to you, listening to you, consuming with you and interacting with you.” His reasons for leaving are typical—tired of the online douchebags—but his idea for an online forum with real-life verification is super interesting.
