The ever-growing buzz of Hindu Kush

MOUNT NEVER-REST: Osa (L), Pesci and Boots

by NARCEL X

Hindu Kush, the duo of MCs Osa and Loe Pesci, are on fire. To be blunt, this Montreal group is on a burning studio rampage. Lighting up the booth twice a week, the dynamic duo are scorching through joints by producer Boots and leaving nothing but roaches for survival. They’re wrapping up their upcoming LP, Plane Crash Survivors, and will be rolling up on MCs with more lines than an avid cokehead.

No stranger to stages, Loe Pesci has been smoking mics since the age of 16 and Osa has enjoyed the high of touring the world from here to Sarajevo. With spaced out tracks like “Grey Alien Suits,” these brown men are sounding doper than your drug dealer’s change pocket.

Mirror: So what are you guys trying to accomplish with this album?

Loe Pesci: The album is basically about getting an advance and linking up with Richard Branson—he owns a record label and a private space program.

Osa: It’s hard to find folks who are really trying to rap their asses off while staying cohesive through an entire project. I like rap for rappers, an MC’s MC.

M: So what’s the science behind Hindu Kush? Is it a weed thing?

LP: Shiva used to smoke ganja in the Himalayan mountains—we’re simply the torchbearers. We’re called Hindu Kush not because of weed, but because both Osa and I are of Indian descent, it’s our motherland and the geographic centre of the world.

O: It’s also a weed thing, though. It’s more of a countercultural reference. Juxtaposition and irony, just like the way we rap. I think the height and scale of those mountains have a universality to them.

M: If your plane crashed in the Himalayas and you survived, what would you want with you?

LP: Macbook, Mbox Mini2, a microphone, three-channel booster engine, preamps for tube compression, ski masks for 2-11s.

O: Comic books, cookies, a little Nietzsche, cigarettes, a pad, a pen and beats by Boots. Oh yeah, Backwoods and butane.
