One of the best films of last year is now out on DVD. The Memories of Angels is Luc Bourdon’s loving tribute to the classic footage of the golden age of the National Film Board. With this feature, he took tiny clips from various old NFB films and reimagined and reedited them into a brilliant montage, a dream-like trip through retro Montreal.

It’s a simply stunning achievement, and while The Memories of Angels is best experienced on the big screen, watching it on TV remains a hypnotic experience. Bourdon has edited his film together through motif, taking us through a snowed-in Montreal, a summer’s day and various famous acts, including Oscar Peterson, Geneviève Bujold, Igor Stravinsky and Paul Anka. Not only does Angels remind us of the storied history of the NFB itself, it’s really something you must see if you’ve ever felt connected to Montreal, however fleetingly. I have already panic purchased several copies for Christmas gifts (nothing like preparing well in advance). Bourdon, who has worked in experimental film and video for years, has managed to reuse old images, creating something entirely fresh and novel from them.

In other crucial angels-related DVD news, season 4 of Charlie’s Angels is soon to arrive. For those of you who’ve forgotten, this was the first season after Kate Jackson, who apparently became unruly on the set, left the show. Enter Shelley Hack, who was a fashion model. The show’s producer, Aaron Spelling, was reportedly actually worried about her acting skill given that she didn’t have much experience. Which is truly bizarre, given that acting never seemed an important requisite for appearing on Charlie’s Angels. The best part of this season is its two-part opener, which features one of the greatest trash pop-culture mash-ups ever: the Charlie’s Angels gang find themselves on board The Love Boat for two episodes, solving a heist mystery on board the Pacific Princess. A combo that hasn’t yet been matched.
