The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

Eminem’s gone all viral on us in order to promote his new album, Relapse, due out in May. He’s created a Web site for a fictional rehab centre called Popsomp Hills (get it?) at popsomphills.com. What makes the whole thing creepy is how authentic the place looks. There’s a Ralph Nader quote on the front page—“Addiction should never be treated as a crime. It has to be treated as a health problem. We do not send alcoholics to jail in this country. Over 500,000 people are in our jails who are nonviolent drug users”—and a number to call now if you need to “speak to a physician” (313-486-5975). As well as having the “lowest relapse rate in the country,” Popsom Hills benefits from the founding principles of one “Dr. Balzac” from Switzerland (why are fake psychiatrists always from Switzerland?), whose approach is: “give people a reason to live by giving them only one thing to live for.” The most unsettling thing, though, is when you click on “learn more” and are taken to the Wikipedia page for Hell. All this would be cooler if clicking on the info links or calling the number got you music, but they both just add you to mailing lists. To get the goods, in the form of the second single, “3 A.M.,” go to tinyurl.com/dhg6yu. Like the Web site, it’s a bit of a letdown.

If you’re interested in where your free music might be coming from in the future, the guilty verdict in the Pirate Bay trial is a bad omen. The Swedish site is the world’s largest bittorrent tracker, facilitating the easy sharing of MP3s, movies and the like, and the owners have just been found guilty in a copyright trial. They were sentenced to one year in jail and fined $3.5-million (U.S.). Yikes!

Deerhunter are prepping for the May release of their new EP, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, by offering up the title track gratis at tinyurl.com/cy9sfz. And finally, Bob Marley’s “One Love” has just been selected as the best Jamaican song of all time by a panel organized through the University of the West Indies: tinyurl.com/cbuzrh.
