Last year’s Who Is KK Downey? was that rare thing—a completely independent, completely self-released Canadian comedy that actually felt more “comedy” than “Canadian.” Made by Montreal’s Kidnapper Films (who, full disclosure, I know and like in civilian life), the film stars Matt Silver and Darren Curtis (who co-directs with Pat Kiely) as a pair of typically Mile-Endian wastrels who concoct a JT LeRoyesque fake author to sell a novel. Of course, their scheme leads to hijinks, hilarity and so forth. It’s a very likeable film with tunes by a host of local musicians and made with an admirable can-do spirit.

Just as they distributed it in Canadian movie theatres all by themselves, they’re now releasing it on DVD too. The DVD version features audio commentary from the gang, and quite a commentary I imagine it will be (I haven’t heard it yet) and some deleted scenes and outtakes. The DVD will be available at all of your beloved local retailers, as well as Amazon.ca, but you can also get it in person if you hit up their launch. That particular party takes place at l’Orignal (479 St-Alexis in Old Montreal), Thursday, April 23, between 5–7 p.m.—check it out, should be a fun event.

I wrote about the recent Special Edition of Vincente Minnelli’s An American in Paris in this space not too long ago, but I recently had the chance to check out the Blu-Ray version of the film, which comes out this week. Man, is it ever glorious. It’s transferred by means of something Warner calls the “Ultra-Resolution” process—no idea if that’s just marketing speak, but there’s no denying the results. It’s a colourful, gorgeous thing and the high-definition version just glows. The movie is a true pleasure to revisit. Minnelli’s Gigi, also out in a special edition DVD recently, gets the fancy treatment as well to similar results.
