From the opening shots of the Eiffel tower peaking out from behind quintessentially Parisian apartment blocks, the new high-def transfer looks gorgeous, though I might hesitate to pick this up if you already own the recent DVD. The film is grainy—beautifully so—but the visual noise doesn’t make this ideal high-def subject and if you have a DVD player that does decent up-conversion, you probably won’t see that much of a difference (this isn’t Planet Earth, with its colourful, crystal-clear and intricate detail). Still, this is a wonderful edition of the film, with cool extras like a commentary by Truffaut pal Robert Lachenay, audition footage of the principals, newsreel footage of the movie’s premiere at Cannes, where it basically blew everybody’s minds, and several TV interviews with Truffaut. Based on an Israeli show, HBO’s In Treatment has a great gimmick. Starring |
