François Truffaut’s classic debut film, The 400 Blows, which starred Jean-Pierre Léaud as Antoine Doinel, a character he would return to again and again through his career, was one of the first DVDs published by the Criterion Collection (#5, to be exact), but due to rights issues, it went out of print and was unavailable for some years. That was corrected recently, but it’s fitting that Criterion should pick The 400 Blows as part of its first roll-out of Blu-Ray titles.

From the opening shots of the Eiffel tower peaking out from behind quintessentially Parisian apartment blocks, the new high-def transfer looks gorgeous, though I might hesitate to pick this up if you already own the recent DVD. The film is grainy—beautifully so—but the visual noise doesn’t make this ideal high-def subject and if you have a DVD player that does decent up-conversion, you probably won’t see that much of a difference (this isn’t Planet Earth, with its colourful, crystal-clear and intricate detail). Still, this is a wonderful edition of the film, with cool extras like a commentary by Truffaut pal Robert Lachenay, audition footage of the principals, newsreel footage of the movie’s premiere at Cannes, where it basically blew everybody’s minds, and several TV interviews with Truffaut.

Based on an Israeli show, HBO’s In Treatment has a great gimmick. Starring Gabriel Byrne as a psychoanalyst, the show ran every weekday, with Byrne seeing a different client (Melissa George and Blair Underwood) every day; on Fridays, you’d see him with his analyst, played by Dianne Wiest. If you didn’t have the time to catch up with all five storylines as they were originally broadcast, you can check out HBO’s new nine-disc set of the first season, containing a whopping 43 episodes. The discs are divided up by week, though theoretically, if you were just into one storyline in particular, you could choose to just watch that “day.” Very much worth seeing—if you have the time.
