For crying out loud

by JOHNSON CUMMINS

For all the weepers, sad sacks, crybabies, Lava Life rejects, Moz fans and people who just enjoy truly horrendous parties, let me offer this tissue for your issues. You can cry, bawl, wail and just generally let it all out on Saturday, April 4, from midnight until 2 a.m. during a recording of a piece called “The Sorrow of the World” at a Montreal studio. Local sound designers Op Music are looking for 40 people to get together and cry in the dark while the whole sad mess is captured by studio whiz kid and emo fan Radwan Moumneh. The organizers promise it will be “a condensed representation of the pain we feel. The performers forego their individuality for the benefit of a primal, powerful and universal sound.” If your idea of a good night is turning on the waterworks while standing in the dark with 39 other strangers, you can contact Olivier at o@op-music.net—and yes, refreshments will be provided afterwards.

For those of you who aren’t feeling particularly choked up this week, you still have a chance to catch Akron/Family when they conclude their two-night stint at Il Motore tonight, with Born Ruffians. Akron/Family live are nothing short of stellar, but another sure thing for people hankering for a dose of good ol’ punk rock ’n’ roll would be the new, streamlined version of Starvin’ Hungry, who are earnin’ some gas money before their East Coast tour, at Quai des Brumes with the Grenades and Ashtray Heart.

LET’S GO, L’ESCO: Les Breastfeeders

As promised last week, my new favourite local band, the O Voids, release their debut record on Troubleman Unlimited on Friday at Barfly with Ashtray Heart (again) and Futencils. Do yourself a favour, head directly to the merch table and pick up a copy of the O Voids’ debut while you’re there, because it’s a true slab o’ pure post-punk bliss.

Myopic indie rock nerds will be rejoicing when Julie Doiron yanks on some heartstrings on Saturday night, while openers $100 warp the roots rock template, at Il Motore. Also happening on Saturday night is the second chapter of the Unsound MTL nights at Zoobizarre. Expect an evening of dark ambient and noise with the atmospheric doom of Longing for Dawn, the power drone of Aun (who launches Motorsleep, his sixth record in just two years) and openers Hyena Hive searing ears with their harsh noise and power electronics.

On Monday, you can try to squeeze into l’Esco when they finish up their month-long nine-year anniversary with les Breastfeeders. This should prove to be a real barnstormer, but if you don’t get there early enough, chances are you won’t get in. A safer bet on Monday night would be the new rock DJ night headed up by

DJ Mucky Pup (Speedhair) and DJ Shawn Central (Squalor, Sound Central) spinning rawk, metal and stoner stuff at le Passeport. In more DJ news, on Monday, you can also check out Nutsak’s Chris Burns spinning everything from no wave and funk to good ol’ rock ’n’ roll at Casa Del Popolo. Also, Red Mass leader and longtime Casa DJ Choyce launches his new weekly rock, post punk, punk and hard psych DJ night, Rock ’n’ Roll Spatial, this Tuesday at l’Escogriffe.

CRYING OVER YOU…
