At the very least, Nigel Haskett’s heroics should have earned him Employee of the Month status. Seeing a man smack a female diner during his shift at a Little Rock, Arkansas, McDonald’s last August, Haskett immediately tackled the man and dragged him outside. Moments later, Haskett stumbled back in and collapsed. He’d been shot several times. Instead of rewarding Haskett, McDonald’s has chosen to prove they see their employees as little more than the cattle they claim to have churned into food. Multiple surgeries and $300,000 in medical bills later, Haskett has been denied his worker’s comp because, according to the swill-shillers, his “injuries did not arise out of or within the scope of his employment.” Though McDonald’s has refused to discuss the decision, Haskett’s attorney, Phillip Wilson, says the company’s position is that Haskett had been told in orientation that “in the event of a robbery or anything like a robbery,” employees were not to get involved beyond calling 911. Haskett says there was no such topic covered in the 30-minute orientation, or at any time thereafter. Wilson has condemned McDonald’s insurers for trying “to get out of paying” Haskett’s benefits and has vowed to fight until his client gets them. by SCOTT SAXON |
