The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

Those of you paying attention will note that I stumbled upon aux.tv last week, a cross-platform channel dedicated, as so many things are these days, to “new and emerging music.” It’s an offshoot of Bite TV, a digital cable specialty channel available across the country, and bearer of an awful young-person slogan, “Where A.D.D. is A.O.K.” Aux.tv functions as an actual show on the station, more or less like The Wedge on MuchMusic, and also as a Web site with original content. As mentioned last week, Alan Cross has a new program, ExploreMusic, and there’s a bunch of documentary-style music shows. Camera Music features live performances in unusual places, and the one of Tony Dekker of the Great Lake Swimmers performing in an abandoned grain silo is indeed quite beautiful (tinyurl.com/acznu7). In partnership with Exclaim!, there’s Garageland, a sort of behind-the-scenes thing looking into the world of Exclaim! and the artists it covers (tinyurl.com/bfryxu). Cypher follows the Canadian hip hop scene (tinyurl.com/b49qgz). There’s lots more, so surf on over to aux.tv.

The classic David Bowie album Ziggy Stardust (or The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, for those serious about such things) has been remixed and mashed up by DJ BC—Bob Cronin to his buddies, one of the best-known artists in the genre—and it’s real good. I think my favourite is “Moonage Symphony” in which Bowie is mashed up with the Supremes, to way better results than I would have imagined. The album is mash-ups of most of the songs, and remixes of the others. There are mash-ups with MGMT, Deep Purple, Jay-Z, Bob Marley and the Beatles, remixes of “Suffragette City,” “Five Years” and others. It’s free, of course, and you can get everything at ziggyremixed.com, including the album art.

And finally, a shout out to Alexandra for Valentine’s Day: Bobby Vinton, “My Special Angel” (tinyurl.com/chrss4). Commence with the booing, groaning and general thoughts of ill will.

HAPPY V-DAY, BABY! ssinnott@gmail.com
