Leaky faucet

Dear Sasha, I have a comical yet troubling problem. Whenever I’m in a semi-sexual situation with a woman, I secrete unusually large amounts of semen (not sperm) even if I’m able to suppress the erection. I thought this condition would subside after a few years of sexual experience but, if anything, it’s increased. The odd thing is I don’t have an issue at all with early ejaculation so I don’t know what to attribute this to. Perhaps it’s genetic? Could you refer me to some sort of male tampon to absorb the leakage instead of me having to wrap my shlong with toilet paper under a pair of tight underwear every time?

-Jay

Dear Jay,

I’m sorry, but are you asking me to provide you with what is basically every man’s worst nightmare: a never-ending urethral swab? Yow, no way. Also, let me clear something up while I’ve got you. Pre-ejaculate is not semen. “The organs that produce this fluid are Cowper glands, the glands of Littre, and possibly the glands of Morgagni,” write Aleksander Chudnovsky and Craig. S. Niederberger in the article “Copious Pre-Ejaculation: Small Glands—Big Headaches” from the Journal of Andrology. Andrology, by the way, is the counterpart to gynaecology and has only been studied as a specialty since the late ’60s. “Pre-ejaculate volume may range in normal men from a few drops to more than five millilitres,” the article continues. “Pre-ejaculate functions naturally as a chemical neutralizer to the urine’s residual acidity in the urethra and thus provides the basic pH of the semen, allowing for safe passage of sperm.” Semen itself is produced by a variety of sources. The bulbourethral and urethral glands produce a miniscule percentage, the testicles and the prostate gland produce a small percentage and the seminal vesicles produce the majority.

In the same article, Dr. Ibrahim Fahmy describes another anatomic source for copious pre-ejaculate. “This clear mucoid secretion…is secreted by Cowper glands and the small submucosal glands of Littre during sexual excitation. This should be differentiated from another physiologic secretion called prostatorrhea. Prostatorrhea is an excess prostatic secretion that is associated with straining during urination or defecation.” While a couple of the doctors prescribe medications like finasteride or dutasteride to solve the problem (Google them both, the possible side effects are quite something), Fahmy very rationally says, “Both types do not require treatment, and the patient should be reassured. If the situation is embarrassing for him, he can use a small absorbent towel.” You can read the whole article here: andrologyjournal.org/cgi/content/full/28/3/374.

Dear Sasha, My girlfriend just found out that she’s pregnant and my concern is the following: can a vibrator affect the foetus? We still have plenty of sex but she’s the kind who can’t reach an orgasm without one. I just feel unsafe about the oscillating effect on the development of the baby.

-Worried

Dear Worried,

“The basic answer is no,” says Bee Lavender, who runs the terrific parenting site hipmama.com. “A vibrator will not upset or disrupt a normal pregnancy, where no other health problems are present. The stimulation is no different than any other kind of sex or assorted aerobic exercises.” Caveats? “Except at the very end of the pregnancy, when sex is often used as a stimulus for wanted labour, using toys should have no impact on the pregnancy and erotic play, and if desired by the mom-to-be, will probably make her life a great deal easier and more pleasant.”

There are situations where pelvic rest is mandatory, but, says Lavender, “the midwife or doctor will have advised on those already. If your partner is active and fully engaged, then so should you be. Most people find that sex is scarce or difficult to prioritize in the fog of early infancy. Enjoy yourself while you can!” Make sure your girlfriend gets hooked up to the hipmama.com community too. I think she’ll find it indispensable.
