Appearances are deceiving

Good looking: Ever wanted to hide in plain sight, but afraid that wearing a mailbox costume would just get you knocked over by rowdy teenagers? For some members of the animal kingdom, camouflage is a way of life. Check out these leaf mimic insects, which can convincingly appear to be not just a leaf, but a very specific dying leaf, ragged and blotched with brown. Some of these, like the Dead Leaf Butterfly, look like they’ve been Photoshopped, but it’s real—and would look more at home rolled up inside a cigar than flying around at conservationreport.com/2008/11/08/.

While you were out: Ever wonder what your toys are up to when you’re not there? The Private Lives of Toys, a photoset on weburbanist, solves the mystery. Uglydolls like to listen to your iPod. Happy Tree Friends take baths in your candy dish. Wall-E makes omelets. And LEGO Joker? He’ll get medieval on your other minifigs as soon as your back is turned. See for yourself at
