My nuts got a MySpace page

First and foremost, it’s been one year since the deaths of Pimp C and our own irreplaceable, cherished and missed Simon Lortie. This column is dedicated to them—their legacy will live on for a mighty long time.

Is there room for hip hop in the Obama White House? Well, in B-Dog’s own words, the answer is unambiguous: “Of course.” In an interview he gave back in February, Barack opened up about his feelings towards hip hop, speaking on his favourite rappers and pulling some pretty damn good metaphors out of his magic hat. He keeps it old school, calling himself more of a Stevie-and-Marvin kind of guy, but he name drops Jay-Z and Kanye and admits to listening to American Gangster on his iPod. Say word?!

He also manages to capture, in one sentence, what some of us spend our lives trying to communicate. “I understand folks want to be rooted in the community, they want to be down, but what I always say is that hip hop is not just a mirror of what is, but it should also be a reflection of what can be. Art can’t just be a rearview mirror, it should have a headlight out there.”

With all the news surrounding his new staff and who he’s surrounding himself with, I think he should take it a step further and start appointing some of these guys to the White House cabinet. Jay-Z, Secretary of Commerce. KRS-One, Secretary of Education. Rick Ross, Defense Secretary, Dr. Dre, Surgeon General, Snoop Dogg, Secretary of All Things Pimpin’… Park jam on the White House lawn, anybody?

Ass & Titties Percolatin’ Ambassador DJ Funk will be sharing the bill with Institubes’ Surkin on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Club Soda for what should be a good workout if you’re a lady and are looking to warm up your backside, or if you’re a dude and are looking for ladies that can b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-bounce that assssss. If there was ever an award for Sweatiest Dancefloor, the booty statuette should automatically go to my man. If I go see Funk, I won’t have to go to the gym this week.

Zoobizarre is home to a new party, Boomboxx, and its first edition on Saturday is hosting NYC’s own DJ/Rupture, who will hopefully rock his signature three-turntable set-up and give us a little taste of his new album, Uproot. He’ll be joined by Gervase, a member of the up-and-coming London collective Heatwave, who happen to run an excellent dancehall blog that you can peep at www.theheatwave.co.uk/blog/.

The Grammy nominations were announced this week and Lil Wayne, who’s gonna be at the Bell Centre on Jan. 15, was nominated for eight little statues including Album of the Year for Tha Carter III. Diplo is also up for Record of the Year for his production on M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” (totally thought that was a Switch beat…). Big up, I remember seeing him DJ at Vinyl three years ago and now I’m gonna see him on TV at the Grammys. Dope.
