Up with the morning sun

by MORGAN STEIKER

First off, big up to Scott C and the Incubator for 10 years of loyal services to the local hip hop community. Your work means a lot to us.

Now let’s fire up the dank, fill up a cold drank and spank hip hop’s good ol’ donkey butt. Folks, the culture here in the city is far from dead in 2008, it’s just softly napping on a hammock. And there’s nothing wrong with a quick snooze now and then, but you know what they say about sleep— it’s the cousin of death. So it’s time to get them boogies out your eyes and snap out of it, y’all. It’s our job now to take a big cold glass of water and throw that monkey right in everybody’s grill. Like, not now, but right now.

GET LOADED: Smif-N-Wessun

Don’t get me wrong, there’s always been a wave pool of moves made by countless individuals here to keep the culture blooming like a Venus flytrap. It would take five times the space I have here to mention all the MCs, DJs, producers, singers, dancers, writers, photographers and designers that dedicate their life and craft to the hip hop scene we call our own here in the city. But what I see on the horizon, comrades, is a movement of tsunami proportions. No more labels, no more limits, no more boundaries, no more lines. Old school, new school, true school, blue school, glue school, flue school, Jew school, zoo school—it’s all over. That’s why I’m calling on all you knuckleheads and degenerates to constantly share with me anything and everything you’re cooking up, no matter what ingredients you’re using. Spicy, bitter, sweet, sour or salty, I want a taste of it all. Whether you’re rocking camo or fluo, fitteds or fedoras, Jordans or All-stars, white tees or buttondowns, as long as you’re making us dance or feeding our imaginations, you’re okay in my book.

This little weekly medley of words here will serve not only as a guide to the lost souls stuck in nightlife’s crossroads, but also as a forum and testament to hip hop’s fierce return to Montreal’s ear holes and dancefloors. Send me your music, projects, events, parties, thoughts, hatred, props, naked pictures of old girlfriends, funny YouTube clips, taco recipes—I want it all! And don’t ever forget that your criticism is my fuel, especially if it’s destructive criticism or better yet, criticism in the form of a message that will self-destruct in the next five seconds…

Let’s take a cue from the mighty Bucktown Cocoa Brovaz Boot Camp generals Smif-N-Wessun and get to’ up from the flo’ up on Saturday, Nov. 29, at Club Lambi (word!) where they’ll be rocking alongside Buzzy Bwoy, l’Queb and Frenchi Blanco’s new duo la Clinick, Theology 3 and DJ Manzo on the decks. The afterparty will be right next door at Balroom, which is celebrating its first anniversary in style with audio services from Team Canada DJs.

ONLY BUILT FOR BLOOMING TEA…
