Now, on the 50th anniversary of the film, you have the opportunity to watch this masterpiece in all of its incarnations. Universal’s new 50th Anniversary edition of Touch of Evil includes both the theatrical and “Welles memo” versions, as well as a preview cut of the film overseen by Welles himself that was released in the ’70s for a brief theatrical run. But for its definitiveness, there’s some irony to this release. While the image quality is gorgeous, controversy has arisen among film fanatics about the film’s Confounding the issue is the fact that the movie was shot to accommodate both. There’s no way to know which is the “right” version, but some people claim the widescreen transfer looks too tightly cropped and are bemoaning the fact that Universal didn’t include at least one “square” version of the film in the set. You may not, however, care about any of this, in which case, enjoy the film. Also out on DVD this week is Guy Maddin’s brilliant docu-fantasia My Winnipeg, packaged with a couple of shorts and not that much else; let’s hope Criterion does an edition the same way they did with Brand Upon the Brain! last year -MARK SLUTSKY |
