I knew this day
would come

by SCOTT C

Well, the day we’ve been hearing about for so many months is creeping up ever so slowly, and it’s scary, but I’m not even talking about Halloween. On Nov. 4, we join the rest of the world in waiting to see if the United States will get a clean slate. Everybody deserves a fresh start, right? The U.S. is no different from that rich, loudmouth kid in high school who would have parties in his parents’ mansion and then destroy the place and shit in the kitchen sink. I know it’s hard, but even that dude can learn from his mistakes. Hopefully the Barack Obama love-movement will step up and surprise the world, as well as the citizens of America. If you’re an Obama supporter and want to add a little bit of excitement to the live coverage of the U.S. presidential elections, check out Cocktails & Obama happening Nov. 4 at the Hotel Opus’s Godin Foyer (10 Sherbrooke W.). Throw in some giant TV screens, hors d’oeuvres and DJ Godfather D, and you’ve got yourself a historic night to remember. You can contact the lovely Martine St-Victor at martine@groupemilagro.com to RSVP for this $10 night. Similar events in Toronto, Vancouver and Brisbane will be streamed live on www.canadaforobama.ca.

STRANGER THAN PHIXION:
Ill Bill

Musicians and producers take note—the Biennale Montreal 2009 Soundscapes Remix Project website is finally up and running! Local composer/pianist David Ryshpan came up with an original piece of music based on a Rick Leong painting, and now it’s up to you to reinterpret that piece before May 1, 2009. If you’re interested in participating in this open source music initiative, check out http://biennalemontreal.org/soundscapes, where you can find all the details, download the source material or sheet music and upload your finished remix. This is definitely one for the beatmakers, but leaves lots of room for those of you who play instruments and read music as well.

Look out for apocalyptic MC Ill Bill at Foufounes Électriques on Wednesday, Nov. 5. He’ll be joined by Duck Down artist Sean Price, but if you go to www.duckdown.com, you can pay $299 to actually perform with Sean on stage. Amazing.

Off the Hook Radio goes live to air on CKUT 90.3FM from Jupiter Room on Nov. 5 as well, with performances from Northern Lights and Royal Peasants, so poke your head in and say hello.

I’d like to apologize to anyone who experienced any kind of confusion at la Sala Rossa last Saturday night, Oct. 25. Because of a double booking (which was 100 per cent my fault, by the way), a lot of you had to wait until after midnight to get the show on the road, and I sincerely apologize for that.

Seven reasons to start with a two-year plan:
1. Q-Tip The Renaissance (Motown)
2. Illa J Yancey Boys (Delicious Vinyl)
3. Menahan Street Band Make the Road By Walking
(Dunham/Daptone)
4. Various Jazzy Sport Top Team: Pound For Pound 2
(Jazzy Sport)
5. Chet Baker Let’s Get Lost (Novus)
6. Various Amplified Presents Dirty Soul (BBE)
7. Gary Numan The Pleasure Principle (Beggars Banquet)
