Getting creative

Cat patrol: Cats are sneaky little creatures that stealthily investigate all corners of their habitat in order to hide small dead animals in places where you will only find them weeks later, purely by olfactory means. Well, some dude figured out a way to keep his cat from munching on the houseplants on his kitchen counter. It involves a Web cam, a strobe light, a blender and a wireless switch thingy. Basically, Web cam sees cat on counter, computer sends signal to switch, strobe light and blender turn on, scaring the feline halfway to bejeezus. It’s not ready for retail at www.plasma2002.com/blenderdefender/.

Get the papers: Papercraft is more than just origami cranes. Devotees of this print-cut-and-glue art manage to make incredible models out of nothing but paper, some of which are so well executed you’d never imagine that all you needed to build them is a colour printer, an X-Acto knife and a Buddha-like level of patience. See (and make) turtles, trains, villages and R2D2 at www.creativecloseup.com/100-exceptional-free-paper-models-and-toys.
