Discuss amongst
yourselves

by SCOTT C

Last night, I sat in a room full of people content with post-Thanksgiving dinner satisfaction and minor drunkenness, and haphazardly got onto the topic of filmmaker and activist Brett Gaylor‘s feature documentary RIP: Remix Manifesto. The film examines current attitudes regarding copyright, with everything from mash-ups and remixes to open-source movements, and the ins and outs of intellectual property, all hot topics of discussion that are on the table. Gaylor’s film screens this Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinéma Imperial as part of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:20 p.m. at Ex-Centris, and should attract a lot of attention as well as discussion in the coming months. The production features appearances from Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, Brazilian musician and former Minister of Cultural Affairs Gilberto Gil, and open-source upstart Girl Talk. Also, don’t forget to check out the RIP: Remix Manifesto party happening Friday at 10 p.m. at UQàM’s Agora Hydro-Québec du Coeur des Sciences (175 President-Kennedy), where DJs Khiasma and Mofomatronix will hold down the fort, and VJ Francis T will be flipping classic NFB animations and live visual remixes of the film. Three dollars gets you in.

WHY NOT? Kalmunity Vibe Collective

Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Sablo Kafé (50 St-Zotique), Montreal’s go-to collective for live soul, jazz, hip hop and reggae present a night dedicated to an intimate, introspective musical discussion on human rights. This Kalmunity Vibe Collective night, called, simply, Why?, will be happening as part of their regular weekly Tuesday-night residency at Sablo, and will run from 8–11 p.m. Make sure you’re a part of this very special night.

Friends of Keith Merrite, aka DJ Ever, who passed away suddenly last month, can attend a memorial service being held in his honour on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Montreal (5035 de Maisonneuve W.). The service will be officiated by Reverend Darryl Grey.

Seven reasons my head hurts more than usual:
1. De Javaanse Jongens “Raw Material” (Kindred Spirits)
2. Take The Dirty Decibels of Thomas Two Thousand (Eat Concrete Holland)
3. Arch_Typ “3333” (www.ptrmusic.com)
4. Ouiroga “No More” (Reebok)
5. SirOJ One for Nalden: Smoke Business (www.nalden.net)
6. Jake One White Van Music (Rhymesayers)
7. Made in Japan “Babyspace” Georgia Anne Muldrow remix (Citywurl)

I can’t remember the last time... fathead@videotron.ca
