Out, damned demon!

Getting rid of unwanted occupants of a human
body can be a devil of a job, says exorcist

by CHRIS BARRY

Name: David Stanger

Age: 81

Occupation: Dowser/Exorcist—of sorts, at least [“I don’t like that word, ‘exorcist’”]

Bio: This highly personable Magog stud only recognized he had “the gift” for exorcising nasty spiritual entities after approaching his sixth decade on this planet as a human being. An ordained priest “After the Order of Melchizedek” who doesn’t like religion or churches—“I just don’t like dogma”—David, who along with his wife founded an organization called the Canadian Society of Dowsers some 20 years ago, says he is regularly called upon to expel demons and similar variations of nastiness from people’s souls, auras and places of residence. He drives a 2006 Nissan X-Trail.

What he does exactly: “Dowsing is a technique of finding things out that you can’t by using your other senses. If you’re dowsing for water using rods or whatever, you’ll find Mother Earth is very willing to allow you to find it. But it’s not just water, you can find missing people, lost objects, anything really. I also remove things from people, not just entities of a human origin but others as well: negative energies, non-human entities, devils, demons, all sorts of things. It’s very serious.”

How do people, when convinced they’ve got ghoulies living inside them, go about finding him? “People sense where to find me when they need me. Right now I’m working with an 11-year-old girl who is seeing things and getting all sorts of weird things around her. But I’m starting to clear her up.”

Is it safe to assume the mother of this child is a religious woman? “I’ve no idea. She came to me by word of mouth, like people always do. I’ve been contacted by priests before though—I assume they were Catholic—who were trying to do some mysterious work they didn’t really understand. You see, I’m not sensitive [to demons etc.]. If I was, I probably wouldn’t be alive today, they would have killed me off already. But they can’t touch me. I’ve too much armour.”

How often he’s contacted to exorcise spooks: “It depends. Right now I’m going through a spate of these things, getting almost a call a day. From all over too: Florida, Wisconsin, Vancouver, Switzerland. Fortunately I can help people over the phone as well.”

How one generally goes about expelling demons: “Almost all I do is a matter of prayer. I have permission to do this work from the higher power, whatever you want to call it. Otherwise I couldn’t work.”

Is it safe to assume that the only sure way to exorcise invasive ghoulies is by hiring his services? “No, I’m not the only person who does this. And there are prayers you can say on a nightly basis that keep these things away, or if they’re already there, that sends them off to where they’ve got to go. I work on an honour system and people send me offerings if they want. I don’t do this to make money.”

Something David has done: Written a book about his experiences called Sacred Dowsing.

One good reason why you don’t want to be possessed by spooks: “Because the really strong entities, the demonic ones, they can totally possess you. They can literally get you to kill harlots, or whatever it might be they’re after, for them.”

So do these ghoulies usually reside in, um…Hell? “No, I don’t believe anything like that exists.”

Last book read: Freedom’s Choice, by Anne McCaffrey.

Musical preferences: Harry James, Benny Goodman, Al Hirt.

Words of wisdom: “Believe in yourself. Allow yourself to grow and be higher and more spiritual.”
