R.I.P., DJ Ever

by SCOTT C

When I first saw Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s 2006 film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, I really was amazed at what they had done to further cement Zidane’s god-like status on the soccer pitch. More importantly, though (sorry, I’m not the ultimate football fan!), they enlisted Glaswegian band Mogwai to heighten the drama throughout a film filled only with the natural sounds of a fan-packed match. This is what made the movie for me. Mogwai’s signature instrumental trips from quiet comfort to deafening decibels, rooted in guitar distortion and slow-building crescendos, have created a mesmerizing sound that is set to touch down in Montreal on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Metropolis. Tix are $25. I’ve never seen them live, but I bet they’re worth every penny.

Just in case you were sleeping, wipe the drool from your mouth and grab some War tickets for tonight, Thursday, Sept. 18 at l’Olympia. These ’70s funk, soul and Latin heavyweights have reunited for a little return to classics like “Low Rider,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends” and my favourite, “Me and Baby Brother.” Tix are $40 in advance.

SOUL CALLING:
Zeeta Maharaj

Don’t forget, Ninja Tune takes over Piknic Électronik this Sunday with Tashish, Luv, Moonstarr, Daedelus, Ghislain Poirier and Bonobo set to light up the afternoon.

You can check out a tribute to the Beastie Boys tonight at Club Lambi, where NulSiDecouvert, Orange Orange, Random Recipe, Wongsifou and the Payz Play DJs (Naes and Ephiks) will do their best to pay homage to Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz. The show starts at 9 p.m. and $10 gets you in.

I was happy to hear this week that Zeeta Maharaj has been officially added as the new co-host of TV show Soul Call, alongside Peter Anthony Holder. Soul Call covers happenings in the West Indian and black community on CJNT (the former CH) and can be seen on cable channel 14, or on Bell Express Vu channel 207. The show airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. and repeats Sundays at 4 p.m., Thursdays at 11 a.m. and Fridays at 8 a.m. While very busy around Montreal for many years, Zeeta is currently a student in the applied sciences department at Concordia, co-host of the Morefyah radio show heard Thursday nights at 10 p.m. on CJLO.com, and a plus-size model with an agency called Scoop. This girl has always been mad busy, and this addition to her already hectic schedule should be a cinch. Good luck, girl!

Lastly, I’d like to send out my deepest condolences to the family of Keith Merritte, who died suddenly while on a trip to Vermont with his wife Jeanie Riddle and daughter Leela on Sept. 1. You may have known him as DJ Ever, playing in and around Montreal for many years. R.I.P., brother.
