Hokey night in Canada

by JOHNSON CUMMINS

The CBC has been taking submissions for a couple of months now in search of the new Hockey Night in Canada theme, and no surprise, almost all of what I’ve heard was utter shite. If you want to utterly disgust yourself, click on anthemchallenge.cbc.ca and buckle up for the cream of the crop of mediocrity. Not all is putrid, though, as I did find one diamond in the rough. Canadian psych-punk legends Simply Saucer actually submitted an instrumental track. It doesn’t stand a chance in hell against Randy Bachman and other humps who fired up their Pro Tools, but the Chrome-style psych of “Exit Plexit” definitely deserves repeated listens, and more importantly, your vote. If you think it’s high time that a healthy dose of hallucinogens was introduced to the wide world of sports, you can vote for Simply Saucer atanthemchallenge.cbc.ca/mediadetail/322266.

Those who love their stripped-down garage washed down with piss and vinegar have to check out Soki Soki tonight, Sept. 11, with the rawk ’n’ roll punk of Miss Fortune and guests Thundrah, Leamers, Merle’s Gitar Band and Peter Pan at Montreal’s finest rock ’n’ roll hotspot, l’Escogriffe.

WHEEL DEAL: The Supersuckers

On Friday, the guitarist’s guitarist Charlie Hunter will absolutely blow minds at Club Soda, and then you can go across the street to celebrate the birthday of Katacombes head honcho Janick when her band After the Bombs lay down some serious D Beat-style hardcore, with Boston’s Morne pummeling out some epic metal/punk à la Neurosis, and Abyssed in there too. Also happening on Saturday night is a great triple bill of post-rock instrumental music with Brooklyn/Austin’s Lymbyc Systym, This Will Destroy You and Thisquietarmy at Zoobizarre.

On Sunday, you can check out the bluesy garage of Holy Moly, who have finally come out of hiding, with B.A. Johnston at l’Escogriffe. Prune-juice punks GBH trudge through hits like “Catch 22” and “City Babies Attacked by Rats” at Foufounes Électriques on Sunday night, with young punks with new contracts Whole Wheat Bread and former crusties Krum Bums.

Speaking of legends, don’t miss the Supersuckers’ twin goldtop attack when they pull into Foufounes on Monday night. My 10-gallon is off to these tour hounds, who’ve managed to buck trends and remain one of the most solid rock bands going, with a live show that remains unbeatable.

With all of this talk of legendary (i.e. old) bands, I’ve saved the best for last. You just don’t get any more legendary than the almighty Motörhead, who will annihilate Metropolis on Tuesday night. I have been privileged to see Lemmy and co. more times than I can count, and the band proves to be just as good, if not better than ever, these days. Opening will be Jerry Only’s piss-poor tribute to the Misfits, called… the Misfits (avoid! avoid!), Airbourne, Valient Thorr (!) and Year Long Disaster.
