Kweli, again?

by SCOTT C

I know it’s a little overwhelming, but the first week of September is here. Say it out loud if you have to, but as you make that annual mental shift that somehow requires you to leave your summer shenanigans behind, know that you’re not alone. I don’t care if you’re going back to school or back to bed, those of you familiar with locals Kweku and the Movement, might be interested in checking out Kweku’s latest incarnation when the Love Movement shares the stage with Caroline Keating at Jupiter Room tonight, Thursday, Sept. 4. The show starts at 9 p.m., with tickets set at $8.

Armed with his signature seven- and eight-string guitars, on which he simultaneously plays basslines, rhythm and solos, Charlie Hunter is 18 years deep in the business, and set to return to Montreal on Friday, Sept. 12. Club Soda will host the show, only two days after the scheduled release of his brand new, independently produced album, Baboon Strength. If you’re into big drums and jazzy, funky chops for days, or think you could learn from one of the most innovative and insane guitar techniques in the world, Charlie Hunter will not disappoint. Tix are only $20, so don’t front.

MAXIN’ ON THE KLAXON: Filastine

Baile Montreal welcomes back Filastine, of Sonar Calibrado Sound System fame, this Saturday, when he plays at Zoobizarre with support from resident Khiasma. Masala and Bendude will open the night, which will run you $5 before midnight and $8 after. On Sept. 12, local hip hop heads Sans Pression & Cobna, Criollo and Boogat will join forces with Psy4 de la Rime for a show at le National. The show will be presented in all-ages glory for the kids and beyond, with the tickets going for $27.50. Doors are at 8:30 p.m.

I got a call from Sixtoo last week with some good news in tow. It looks like Scottish beat destroyer Hudson Mohawke and his Glaswegian pal of a million joints Rustie will be coming to play at Turbo Crunk during Pop Montreal on Oct. 4. I know, I know... There was a lil’ hiccup the last time HudMo was supposed to come through, but I think he’s probably aiming at making nice with you people this time around. More later.

So you already know about Red & Meth, Common and N.E.R.D. at the end of the month, and Janet Jackson who’s doing the Bell Centre on Sept. 29, but did you know Talib Kweli was playing Concordia’s 2008 Orientation festivities with the Stills on Sept. 11? It’s like Montreal can’t get enough of this guy.

Lastly, look for appearances in Montreal from Stones Throw’s West Coast boogie specialist Dam Funk at the Goods on Sep. 27, and a special show from Digable Planets in early October. Check back here for more details as the days go by.
