Wouldn’t you know it, there’s a whole slew of new Bat-product out there for crazed fans to scoop up. There’s a fancy-pants new Batman Begins gift set, which looks pretty sweet on Blu-Ray, but more interesting and fresher is the Batman: Gotham Knight disc. Now, I’d never really been too familiar with the whole new world of the super-stylized DC Comics-based animated series produced by creator Bruce Timm, though I’d heard many, many good things. So I was interested in this stand-alone film, which apparently is “the first PG-13 animated Batman movie,” whatever that means. It’s pretty neat: six intertwined stories animated by different artists and written by well-known comics dudes like David Goyer, Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello. It was nice to revisit One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which has been recently re-released by Warner in a shiny new Blu-Ray edition. Not the first film I’d really have picked for the high-def treatment, but when I watched it again, I realized how much Haskell Wexler’s cinematography really shines. You shouldn’t have to be told this is a classic; if you haven’t seen it, get to it—former Joker Jack Nicholson has never been better. MARK SLUTSKY |
