Solo solidarity

[Re: “Flying solo,” Riff-Raff, July 17] I totally understand that fear of living alone for the first time. It’s something I struggled with for a while. The thing to remember is, it will get better and go away.

I used to sleep with music playing and the lights on, then just the music. Now I don’t have a problem at all.

You’ll get through this. Good luck Raf!

Raf’s column made me feel like less of a twit. I moved out on my own this month and keep waking-up at 3 a.m. each night terrified of the dark. My imagination off and racing, thinking there was someone wandering around the otherwise empty house.

I actually took comfort when I woke up one morning and found a squirrel at the end of my bed—I felt companionship.

So, to try and counteract my irrational fears, I’ve taken to sleeping with a heavy dumbbell under my bed and last week, I started to blockade the door each night with a sit-up bench. (I couldn’t be imaginative enough to make this up if I tried.)

I slept so happily, straight through, every night (except if my flatmate came home and walked into things waking me up). I’m hoping by the end of the month I will get used to it rather than become more neurotic.

Driving social
justice

[Re: “Soccer and satire,” News, July 24] Mother Nature was not favourably inclined towards “Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui,” on Saturday, July 26, since it rained heavily. Of course, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the anti-Security Certificate Coalition.

In any case, the novel tactics of combining “sports, satire and theatre” to drive a social justice principle home should work in the long run.

I fully endorse Mary Foster, one of the organizers of the event when she says that, “This struggle is far from over.”

Unless all the suspects of the vicious Security Certificate legislation are free, both the traditional and non-traditional forms of protest must continue.

More truth needed

[Re: “To tell the truth,” Letters, July 24] Finally, someone prints something about 9/11 Truth. Cheers Mirror! More articles on this subject would be nice to see considering the elephant in the room.

How about an article on the architects and engineers for 9/11 Truth? Or a history of NORAD emergency procedures? Or possibly an article about the vast wealth of scientific and forensic studies on the subject and why it’s never mentioned in any major publication?

Fanatics at fault

[Re: “Not God’s fault,” Letters, July 24] I agree with M.N. Syed that it’s not religion that causes all the troubles listed in the many letters on the subject, but rather the practitioners.

Syed goes a bit too far in giving the impression that all or most Jewish and Christian leaders are the cause, rather than just a few fanatics and misguided ones.

But I was delighted that (according to Syed) it’s just Jews and Christians. I am overjoyed to know that no Muslim clerics or leaders, for example, would plan and execute airplane hijackings and fly planes into buildings. I am pleased that they would not teach that Jews are the sons of pigs and monkeys and call for the obliteration of their country.

Joy comes from knowing that no imam or mullah anywhere would ever celebrate as a hero one whose accomplishment was bashing in the head of a four-year-old girl or send their sons and daughters as human bombs to kill people, or would keep females imprisoned in burqas and deny them education.

They certainly wouldn’t command militias that kill fellow Muslims nor use injustice and pressure to cause Christians to leave Egypt, Bethlehem and Hezbollahstan (formerly Lebanon), where they have been for 2,000 years.

If I understand it correctly, only Jewish rabbis and Christian priests and ministers do these things (and their fanatical followers).
