One might think members of the Disabled American Veterans would give their right leg to lay eyes on one of the pricks who’d helped them lose their left one. But when Dick Cheney’s acceptance of their invitation to speak at the DAV convention next month came with a list of security demands, the vets decided some things aren’t worth the bother—and the current U.S. Vice President is one of them. According to the DAV, Cheney’s office insisted all attendees be seated in the conference room two hours prior to the VP’s speech and would not be allowed to leave until Cheney was gone. That would have made even the bathrooms off-limits. For an organization comprised of people with serious health issues, being sequestered for hours isn’t a reasonable request and the DAV withdrew their invitation. Although Cheney’s office insists the security demands were a “recommendation, not a requirement,” the DAV says the office is just trying to save face. Having had the same “recommendation” forced on them when Cheney graced their convention in 2004, DAV official David Autry says there was no reason to believe concessions would be made this time around. by SCOTT SAXON |
