MTL runnings

by SCOTT C

Skratch Bastid’s back in town, so that means a full-on party tonight Thursday, July 24 at Coda when he joins forces with Rilly Guilty for a night of sweaty, hip hop-inspired madness. Doors are at 10 p.m., with free entry before midnight and $4 after.

Montreal’s Metazon is not playing around with their World Class Buffet, set to hit unsuspecting crowds at Jello Bar on Tuesday, July 29. You might have heard the name before, but you’re in store for some brand new shit, complete with a live band and a return to hip hop basics. Don’t front, these guys will not disappoint. Tax is $5 at the door with the show starting at 8 p.m. Check out “One With the City” at www.myspace.com/metazon for a little Montreal primer.

Nomadic Massive plays Bobards this Saturday, and with their live show just getting tighter and tighter, I’m sure they’ll blow that place out right quick! Five dollars gets you in, but for $10, you can support the cause and come out with a CD. The money will go towards an upcoming trip they’ve got planned for Brazil. Truly nomadic...

SELF-CONSTRUCTIVE: Monk.e

You think you know, but Sunday nights at Tokyo have been running for eight years! The World Famous Tokyo Bar Sundays featuring the sounds of the mighty Goontribe are still going strong, flooding the dancefloor with hip hop, R&B, reggae and old school every single week. This Sunday, big man DJ Quest will be making an appearance alongside residents Goldenchild, Kidd, Cue and De Leon, and you know how they do. Don’t bother showing up busted either, because they will send your ass home. Yes, the dress code is in effect, with $5 for ladies and $12 for everybody who is not a woman.

Coming up fast on Aug. 1, get ready for the much anticipated launch of Monk.e’s new LP, Entre Mektoub & Autodestruction, his second solo album. The big show goes down at Petit Campus and features special guests K6A, Amerythmes, Sola y Las Solas, Homeless Royalty, Urbn Logix and DJs 7D, Manifest, Naes and Stack Money. Ten bucks gets you in, while $25 ensures you leave with the new record in tow. The doors are at 9 p.m. Follow the yellow brick road to www.myspace.com/monkemusic.

Don’t forget, NYC’s DJ Sabo plays the Goods this Saturday. Summertime jam in full effect, people! Ten dollars at the door, no frills...

Seven reasons it’s better to go through it, and not around it:
1. Dilla Ghost Doom “Murder Goons” (Stones Throw)
2. Daru feat. Reggie B “Future Music” (4Lux)
3. Johnny Pacheco “Boogaloo de Johnny” Quantic remix
(Mr.Bongo)
4. Payz Play “Il Était 2 Fois” Goods remix (Anubis)
5. Woolfy “Odyssey” (Sonar Kollektiv)
6. Nosaj Thing “Coat of Arms” (Stussy)
7. Skillz “The Nod Factor” (Big Beat)
