This planet-sized 17-disc collection is composed of four self-contained box sets. There’s The Life of Mammals, exploring every manner of live-birthing, hair-having critter under the sun, from dolphins to dudes. The Life of Birds is a 10-episode exploration of the world of our fine feathered friends, with segments on their songs, carnivorous birds, courtship and more. If you missed Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis while it was in theatres, you owe it to yourself to check it out now that it’s on DVD. Co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, Persepolis is an animated adaptation of Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same title, which deals with her childhood and adolescence in Iran, before, during, and after the Revolution. It’s an utterly absorbing story, beautifully told through her simple images, and it’s a powerful way to communicate history, through one person’s individual and idiosyncratic experiences. The DVD features some perfunctory extras: commentary, but only on selected scenes, making-of featurettes focusing on both the film and the two versions of it (English and French), and comparisons between the animated version and the original book.
