Look to the
heavens

by SCOTT C

Looks like the weekend weather is set to cooperate for this Saturday, May 31, when Mutek takes over Piknic Électronik for the day. For $10, you can check out the sounds of Montreal’s own Komodo, who just dropped a brand new LP called Subluna on Sambal Records. He takes the decks at 2 p.m., followed by Los Angeles beat king and Warp Records recording artist Flying Lotus, who does his thing until 4:30 p.m., when you’ll enjoy the sounds of U.K. dubstep dons Kode 9 & Space Ape, with Tempa Records’ artist Martyn making his Canadian debut and rounding out the afternoon at 6 p.m. You should probably also know that if it does look like rain, you can check out the above line-up at the SAT.

Either way, you’ll have more than enough time to make your way to the Goods Homegrown Edition at la Sala Rossa starting at 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. Due to an unforeseen double booking, local don Christian Pronovost will not be the special guest for the evening as planned, but we’re still gonna try and make it nice for y’all, y’know?

Also on Saturday, a little further downtown, animation students from the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema will be presenting the Wild Card Animation Screening at Théâtre Ste-Catherine, with showings happening at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. At 11:30 p.m. there’ll be a musical performance by Barbajan, followed by a heterogeneous grab bag of music provided by the Mirror’s DJ Rupert Bottenberg.

Tonight, Thursday, May 29, make a move down to the stush confines of Wunderbar at the W Hotel for the Rebirth of Cool. DJs Toddy Flores and Kelly Nunes team up with hosts T-Wyze and Jeff to bring you a hot weekly party that’s rooted in good music, good people and good fun. Hit up twyze@madvision.ca for some guest-list action.

The final deadline to submit an application to be a part of Pop Montreal’s October 1-5 calendar is set for June 2. Those of you interested in showcasing or being a part of the now annual music symposium should send a certified cheque for $25 payable to Pop Montreal, and a CD with three highlighted songs, bio, photo and press kit to: Pop Montreal, 5445 de Gaspé suite 213, Montréal, QC, H2T 3B2, Canada. You also have to answer one of these two questions—“Why is community so important in these times of rampant individualism and an iPod obsessed culture,” or, “Why is it important to listen to a regular and healthy amount of music by Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder?” Don’t hesitate!

Happy birthday, Charbs! And that goes for you too, Pants! All the best...
