BEST VINTAGE CLOTHING STORE #1: La Gaillarde
Best Clothing Store (New)

1. Simons (977 Ste-Catherine W., (514) 282-1840)
2. H&M (various locations)
3. Urban Outfitters (various locations)
4. Off the Hook (1021a Ste-Catherine W.,
(514) 499-1021)
5. Tie American Apparel (various locations)
and Old Gold (256 Mont-Royal E.,
(514) 509-1675)

Simons and H&M battle it out for top place once again, while Off the Hook drops from first to fourth. The real surprise here is American Apparel, with a virtual monopoly on the street, tied for fifth place with independent boutique Old Gold.

Best Vintage Clothing Store

1. La Gaillarde (4019 Notre-Dame W.,
(514) 989-5134)
2. Salvation Army (various locations)
3. Eva B (2013 St-Laurent, (514) 849-8246)
4. Local 23 (23 Bernard W., (514) 270-9333)
5. Preloved (4832 St-Laurent, (514) 499-9898)

La Gaillarde comes out of nowhere to claim top prize in this category. Selling both vintage and new pieces made out of used clothes, the store offers the best of both the Villages des Valeurs and Preloved worlds.

Best Hair Salon

1. Funky Toque (3688 St-Laurent, (514) 985-2999)
2. Coupe Bizarre (3770 St-Laurent,

BEST HAIR STYLIST #1:
Dave at Funky Toque

Best Hair Stylist

1. Dave, Funky Toque (3688 St-Laurent,
(514) 985-2999)
2. David De Vico, Queen of the World

5. Rawa, Coupe Bizarre (3770 St-Laurent,
(514) 843-3433)

Dave and David are once again neck and neck for the place of best stylist in the city, along with perennial fave Rawa, who’s relegated to number five this year thanks to two newcomers. JJ Levine makes it on the list for the first time with her gender-defying styling. Miss. Janet, another first-time winner, makes the grade without the backing of a salon. This lady is doing it for herself.

4. Inbeat Records (3814 St-Laurent, (514) 499-2063)
5. Atom Heart Records (364 Sherbrooke W., (514) 843-8484)

In this age of downloading, it’s almost heart warming and nostalgic to see someone buy a CD. And though it’s no surprise to see big boys HMV and Archambault grab top rank, Cheap Thrills, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, holds steady in third place and is still king when it comes to used records (see below). Hooray for Cheap Thrills!

Best Record Store (Used)

1. Cheap Thrills (2044 Metcalfe, (514) 844-8988)
2. L’Échange (various locations)
3. Beatnik (3770 St-Denis, (514) 842-0664)

5. Layton Audio (1170 Ste-Catherine W.,

Best Internet Service Provider

1. Videotron (videotron.ca)
2. Bell (bell.ca)
3. None
4. Rogers (rogers.com)
5. VIF (vif.com)

While Videotron and Bell take the top places, “none” is close behind in third. And it presents an interesting question: does “none” refer to the poor service provided by the providers, or is this a simple reference to spending all your Internet time at a café where you can use their wi-fi for the price of a cup of coffee? Or is everyone leeching?

Montrealers like their yoga hot. The winner of this first time category, Moksha Yoga, offers classes in rooms between 38–41 degrees, which simultaneously makes you sweat and keeps your muscles limber while you force yourself into a downward dog. And for those who don’t like to sweat, Yoga Bliss (#3) takes a more mellow approach and even offers a meditation session to help with your inner peace.

Moog Audio is here

SONIC TEMPLE: Moog Audio

by LORRAINE CARPENTER

DJs, producers, promoters and musicians won’t be surprised to see Moog Audio in the Best of Montreal. The store is a BOM staple, but this is the first time it’s appeared in three categories—Best Electronics Store, Best Musical Instrument Store and Best Stereo Store.

“Alright!” says the store’s founder, Alex Kano. “I’m gonna celebrate tonight!”

Moog has been selling and renting musical equipment since 1998, increasing sales by 40 per cent every year and cranking its visibility by sponsoring hundreds of local events. There’s already a Moog Audio store in Toronto, a Calgary branch will open its doors by the end of 2008 and a Vancouver branch is due in time for the 2010 Olympics.

Named after late synthesizer inventor Bob Moog, the business had humble beginnings in the back of the now-defunct Science Records in Mile-End. Kano, who got to know all the local DJs as an employee at Italmelodie, established Moog to fill a void. “There was no DJ equipment store here in Montreal,” he says. “Everything was in New York.”

Now located on St-Laurent north of Roy, Moog sells everything from DJ gear to guitars, samplers to amps, Apple products to recording equipment. Their range of rental gear facilitates building a sound system from scratch, whether for live bands or DJs, in conventional or unconventional venues. Moog’s long list of regular clients includes the all-day, outdoor-party people behind Piknic Électronik, and they recently wired Tribe Hyperclub for sound and vision, a set-up the Moog Web site refers to as a “masterpiece.”

It would be difficult to find a music festival, club or recording studio free of Moog’s fingerprints. But, despite consistently topping the Stereo Store category (much to Kano’s amusement), this is one area in which Moog has bupkis.

“Unfortunately, we don’t sell any stereo equipment,” he says. “But that’s cool. At least we’re winning!”
