D-I-Why? Sweden may be the home of Saabs, Volvos and Absolut Vodka, but has nothing to do with the process of “Sweding” movies, inspired by Be Kind Rewind. It involves taking the parts you like of the movies you like and recreating them using junk you happen to have lying around, plus duct tape and lots of creativity. So lots of people have done this, for films as diverse as The Big Lebowski to Star Wars to Kindergarten Cop and Reservoir Dogs. Some are funny, some are dumb, but just like these guys decided to play director, you can play movie critic at snacked.blogspot.com/2008/02/attempt-to-complete-list-of-sweded.html. Dr. Verystrangelove: Speaking of zero-budget-films-worth-watching, Vice magazine founder (and former Montrealer) Shane Smith took a friend and a couple of pocketable digital cameras to North Korea to shoot a VBS.TV documentary on the Kim Jong Il “tourist experience”—okay, maybe Shane plays up the danger a little much in his gonzo Orson Welles persona, but it’s riveting viewing at www.vbs.tv/shows/north-korea/.
