European union

by SCOTT C

While the Wefunk wheels keep turning right here at home every Friday night from midnight to 2 a.m. on CKUT 90.3FM, DJs Professor Groove and DJ Static are getting ready to embark on what has become an annual trip across the pond for their European tour. The funk, soul and classic hip hop radio staple has listeners around the globe, thanks in part to Groove’s meticulous selections, Static’s love for the real boom-bap and a little thing called iTunes syndication. If you’d like to catch these dudes in the flesh before they take off, make a move down to Blizzarts tonight, Thursday, April 24, for the Wefunk Pre-European Tour Party. With a schedule that will take them through Switzerland, France, the U.K. and Germany, I’m sure they’d be happy to have you send them off.

Those of you who like to get a little closer to the dancefloor should know that Throwdown Tuesdays are happening every single week at Academy, with DJs Kobal and Ilya. Playing golden-era hip hop, classic breaks, nu-funk, raw funk, boogie and Afro beats, this shit is strictly for the b-boys and b-girls—well, not exclusively, but the peeps at www.4everfresh.net are all about breakin’, lockin’, hip hop and breakstyle fusion, so much so that every week, they’ll be inviting different dance instructors in from 9–10 p.m. to lace people with new moves. Cover is a mere $3 for the night, or $6 if you’re taking the early-bird dance class.

Ottawa’s internationally known Souljazz Orchestra touches down in Montreal this Saturday, April 26 at la Sala Rossa for a gig at the Goods. Those of you who have either caught them live in Montreal before, or own their last album, Freedom No Go Die, know full well that this is a show not to be missed. Plus, as many of you already know, when I’m not setting police cars on fire and looting Ogilvy’s display windows, I can be found manning the decks with my man Andy Williams at the Goods. Ten dollars gets you in.

Also this Saturday, April 26, Chicago’s Gene Farris steps into the booth at Cherry for a night of your favourite Chicago house vibes, complete with Simon B and DJ Slyde for full effect. This is the inaugural night for a new monthly presented by Most Wanted Entertainment, so come out and support. The tax is $15 at the door, and if you need to reserve a table, call (514) 841-9669.

Lastly, big birthday beats go out to J Shiek, who celebrated his birthday this week with a huge riot and a midnight shopping spree on Ste-Catherine. Happy b-day, man.

Seven reasons I remember everything:
1. Starpoint “It’s All Yours” (Elektra)
2. Ghostface Killah “Trials of Life” feat. Prodigy (Starks)
3. Kenlo “Wong” (CDR)
4. Africa Hi-Tec “Too Late” feat. Rio (RBMA)
5. Zero DB “Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines” Raymond in Space
mix (Ninja Tune)
6. Jamie Lidell Jim (Warp)
7. David Kitay “The Price Is Right Theme” (Lakeshore)
