Sprung

by SCOTT C

Just in time for this strange little weekly tease that we call spring comes a brand new night called Extended Hours, making its debut tonight, April 10, down at the old Kunta Lounge, now known as Pearl (2021 St-Denis). Bank of Mount Real heads and local hip hop artists Sikh Knowledge and Goodvibes man the controls for this weekly dip into hip hop, classic soul/R&B, dancehall, lovers rock and the finest in locally produced hotness. Those of you who miss the cozy, music-rich nights in the basement and the wicked terrasse at Kunta should plan on making this a weekly affair. There’s no cover at the door, so count on serious vibes and two-for-one drinks at the bar. I’ll see you there.

The mighty Kalmunity Vibe Collective Hip Hop Ensemble provides support for Preach Ankobia and friends when they present Thursday Without Borders tonight at the Belmont. Preach will be performing songs from Voice of the Streets with help from Jon E, Fredy V, Sonia Soul, Fabrice and more. $10 gets you in, with a 9 p.m. showtime.

This Friday, Planet Funk 2: Spring Jump Off tries to get into the spirit of things with another big undertaking at les Saints. With Ceasrock, Chow Nasty, New Groove Orchestra and Kalmunity on the bill, as well as DJs Conn Shawnery and Sarcastic in the place, things could get a little nutty. Tix are $10 at the door, or $8 with a valid student ID card. Big shouts to Mama Z from More Fyah Radio, who’ll take on hosting duties for the night. You can check out more about the show she does with Junior Vibes and Singing P on Concordia’s CJLO AM at www.myspace.com/morefyahradio.

Fans of Off the Hook Radio’s DJ BuddaBlaze and his F.B.I. crew can catch them performing alongside Tha Alkaholiks this Sunday at les Saints. The freaks come out at night, kid!

Komodo and the Montreal Sub Syndicate try to outdo themselves with a huge party on Saturday, April 19, at Academy with 10,000 watts of sound and special guest Caspa, all the way from London. Also on the decks are Komodo, Hosta, Sase One, Jack, Adam L, DJ In Your Face and Kiffah. You probably don’t want to eat before you face the bass in this place, but some of you will pay $10 in advance to be pleasantly disemboweled.

Seven reason things don’t fall from the sky:
1. Jamie Lidell “Figured Me Out” (Warp)
2. Samiyam & Hudson Mohawke “Eff This” (Red Bull Music Academy)
3. Sarah Lahey & Om’mas Keith “Get Over it” (Red Bull Music Academy)
4. Indigone Trio & Strings “Visions” (Ropeadope)
5. Shad “Out of Love Part Two” (Black Box)
6. Ben Westbeech “Hang Around” Karizma’s Deeper 1 Mix (Brownswood)
7. The Narcicyst Stuck Between Iraq & a Hard Place Vol. 2 (independent)
