The third season of Battlestar Galactica started so well, with most of the human population living on the planet of New Caprica under a Cylon-controlled but human-staffed occupation government, and a handful of military types still on the Galactica itself, plotting a rescue. The season’s first few episodes introduced a human resistance, suicide bombing and a daring rebellion against the Cylons, with parallels to the Iraq war that were hard to miss… and which were especially interesting as the insurgents were the good guys.

It was a promising start, but after that explosive beginning, the season ground to a halt. With episodes focusing on relationship crises, a poorly defined racist doctor and other stuff that seemed irrelevant to the bigger picture, Battlestar lost the sense of urgency that had made it so compelling. The last few episodes did a little to pick up the pace, with some explosive (and baffling) revelations in the season finale, so let’s hope season four, which starts airing in a couple of weeks, recovers the plot. If you need to catch up, season three is now available on DVD, with the usual behind-the-scenes special features.

If you haven’t seen the violent, glamorous ’60s landmark Bonnie and Clyde lately (or, God forbid, at all), now’s a good time to revisit it. Arthur Penn’s classic has been restored from the original elements and packaged in a few different extra-special editions. The DVD version is available in either a “Special Edition” or “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” (for all of you ultimate collectors out there), and both include Love and Death: The Story of Bonnie and Clyde (a History Channel doc), a new doc about the film itself, deleted scenes and Warren Beatty’s original wardrobe tests. The Blu-Ray version includes all of those things plus a hardcover book with info about the production and some nice shiny pictures.
