Tix for the Liks

by SCOTT C

Looks like Montreal is going to get a visit from the Alkaholiks, who are coming up in April for a show at les Saints. On Sunday, April 13, J-Ro, Tash and E-Swift will all be in the house, along with special guests Starski and Hyro the Hero, performing all your favourite joints. Local heads F.B.I. and Cyrano de Montréal will round out the night, with music by DJ Manifest to boot. Tix are $17.50, available at Off the Hook, Underworld, Fly Society and City Styles.

As I was writing about Shit’s Ill Wednesdays at Coda this week, I got an e-mail from More or Les letting me know the night has been shelved even before it could get popping properly. He was doing the night with Killa Jewel, who if I’m not mistaken is getting ready to drop an album on a bunch of unsuspecting heads in the city. While you may be familiar with her turntable skills, you might not know that she’s also a talented musician with piano chops and songwriting skills. Her debut production LP, Saudade, is bubbling, but look for the single “Sorrow” and a fresh new video on the horizon very soon.

Coming up next Thursday, April 3, 4DZ, Empire Isis and your DJ for the night, image Sikh Knowledge, take over Théâtre Plaza for a blowout night called Sin City: Tha Movement. Sikh has volunteered that anybody who buys their $15 ticket from him, at kanwar1@gmail.com, will receive a free copy of his latest album, Nu High, as a companion gift. Get on that, and you’ll be happy you did.

Inword lays down some roots reggae this Friday at House of Reggae. For $5, you can be sure you’ll get a nice dose of blessed vibes and such from this band. They’ll be playing two sets, and doors are at 10:30 p.m. Looking ahead, another Kalmunity family member is doing his own thing, with Jahnice slated to make his solo debut with a show on April 12. He’s been working with bassist Patrice Agbokou on some brand new material, under the name Hybrid Soul, that he’ll be performing at Kola Note on April 12 when he opens for the pop-reggae-soul sounds of Selasee. Also on the bill are the highlife rhythms of Ghana’s Nii and Odja. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Check out some Jahnice tunes over at www.myspace.com/jahnice.

Seven reasons this is just a dress rehearsal:
1. Yusef Lateef “Eastern Market” (Rhino)
2. Boogie Down Productions “Super Hoe” (Jive)
3. Wumni “Greedy Body” Daz-I-Kue remix (CDR)
4. Moonstarr “Tigerfunk” (PTR)
5. Plantlife “Something About Her” (Rapster)
6. Eric Lau “I Don’t Do It To” (Ubiquity)
7. Portishead Third (Island)
