Man bites dog

Something smells gangsta!

When it comes to tucking a loaded handgun away for safe-keeping, few places are as obvious a choice as an oven. After all, any good recipe begins “Check oven for firearms.” A woman in South Side Chicago obviously had one of those sloppily written recipes that skipped straight to pre-heating, and the results were two victims short of delicious.

According to Chicago police officer Marcel Bright, 24-year-old Anthony Smith had hidden a revolver in the oven until he next needed it, not taking into account that somebody might get hungry before then. When a woman who lives in the home turned the oven on to cook, the heat caused the bullets to start firing, hitting her two brothers. One, a four-year-old, was struck in the leg, while his 12-year-old brother caught a fragment of the exploding gun on his forehead.

Both boys were taken to hospital. The younger was in stable condition, but kept for treatment, while the older was patched up and released promptly. Smith, a convicted felon out on parole, was charged with two counts of endangering the life of a child, and one count of unlawful use of a firearm.
