The kids are alright

by SCOTT C

Those of you feeling a little tongue-tied should plan on making a move up to Kola Note on Feb. 16 when The Art of Performing Aural Sex presents an epic night of spoken word performances. This tight mix of comedy, eroticism and poetry provides a stacked bill with Nadine “The Poetress” Pyram, Cedric “NYCE” Audige, Terrine Friday, Howard Parchment, Yolande Monfiston and your hosts, Lady Katalyst and Kym Dominique Ferguson. Also on the bill from Dallas, Texas is the always eloquent Rock Baby, who has starred on Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and available at Kola Note, Concordia Students Union (1455 deMaisonneuve W.) and Doreen’s Maison de Beauté (6875 Victoria). Part of the proceeds will be given to the Centre for AIDS Services Montreal.

I’m sure the dudes behind a new night simply called Dubstep will come up with something a little more creative eventually, but for now, you should know that the first Thursday of every month is now dedicated to dubstep at Zoobizarre. For a mere $4, DJs InYourface, Sarcastic, Blake Market and Intoccabile present a night of bass-heavy wobblers featuring dubstep/hip hop mashups throughout the evening.

Looks like another incarnation of Hip Hop Karaoke has popped up in Montreal, this one affiliated with the wildly successful chapter that has been running things in Toronto. On Friday, Feb. 22, you’ll get your chance to rap the rhymes of your favourite MCs, accompanied by the original instrumentals, at Cagibi. Your hosts More or Les, Tashish and Moonstarr will ensure that a good time is had by all, and that you’ll get your chance to spit the hard parts of Kool G Rap’s “Ill Street Blues.” Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and $5 gets you in, but you can check out the deets and a full instrumental list at www.HHKmontreal.com.

Lastly, Leave Out Violence presents a vernissage for an exhibit called Larger Than Life tonight, Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Nexus Centre for Arts and Culture at 218 St-Paul W., 3rd floor, in Old Montreal. Local DJ and photographer Ms. B, aka Bonnie Zehavi, has been working with a group of kids aged 13–17 since October on a photojournalism project that documents their lives, with all the works on display done by the kids in the program. The exhibit runs to March 6.

Seven reasons the flavour always comes through in the end:
1. KenLo Craqnuques (Noir) (independent)
2. Black Sheep “Novakane Groove” (Bumrush)
3. Zapp & Roger “Computer Love” (Warner)
4. J*Davey “sLAyer” (independent)
5. Ghislain Poirier/J Dilla feat. Face-T “No More Blood”
Mashup (independent)
6. Trus’me “Drilling” (Fat City)
7. Robert Strauss “Party in My Body” (Scott C’s GOODS Mix)(BBE)
