Juno anything about
music, meng?

by SCOTT C

I may be getting old people, but it’s been a long time since some young lions rolled in and made me take notice. I’m talking about early-A-Trak young, bum-rushing an unsuspecting and largely older club scene with youthful exuberance. On Friday, Jan. 25, Time Supper Club welcomes the Martinez Brothers, a young duo who are turning a lot of heads in their native NYC’s soulful house community, as well as clubs around the world. Fifteen-year-old Chris and his 18-year-old brother Steve have been consistently dropping jaws while playing gigs at NYC’s Shelter and Danny Krivit’s 718 Sessions, as well clubs in Paris and Dublin.

Although the two credit their father as the main reason they have the love for the music they do, house legends like Krivit and Dennis Ferrer are getting behind the youngsters as well. Ferrer even plans to release their debut production by the end of 2008 on his Objektivity label, but has them studying the fundamentals of engineering and production in the meantime. The record, called My Rendition, already has a lot of people excited to see if these guys can rock it on record like they do in the booth. Check out www.myspace.com/themartinezbros if you need to know more, and set aside $20 for a ticket to see them at Time this Friday.

Following his Igloofest set, big Ghislain Poirier bounces back with a show next Thursday, Jan. 31 at le National. I got a note from my boy MC Abdominal saying he’ll being joining in the fun onstage, after appearing on Ghislain’s latest LP.

I’m still feeling super frustrated because right after I’d finished talking to Cut Chemist on the phone for an article in this week’s issue, my friend Kevin informed me that good ol’ Lucas MacFadden had indeed made a cameo appearance in Jason Reitman’s Juno. As if this film needed anything else to make you want to check it out. Can we expect a budding career in film from Cut? Is he going to follow in the footsteps of Will Smith or Ice-T and be running the industry in a few years? Probably not. I revisited Juno online, and it’s a true spilt-second cameo. He even has a line, but it’s Cut Chemist playing Cut Chemistry teacher. I’d still love to know how that all came about. See Juno if you haven’t.

On Monday, Jan. 28, I’ll be pulling out the good stuff with 7D at Casa del Popolo when we present our second annual J Dilla tribute, I Heart J Dilla. Hard to believe that the second anniversary of James Dewitt Yancey’s death is coming up on Feb. 10, but if you were a fan of his music before he died, or discovered his back catalogue after he passed, you shouldn’t miss this night of music. Doors are at 10, no cover.
