Katacombes will once again host their weekly Thursday punk rock night this week, but step it up tonight, Jan. 17, with guest DJs that include none other then DJ Mark Dread and DJ Shawn Central, Sound Central record store owner and drummer for Squalor, Blood Sausage and a host of others. Staying on the hard and heavy tip, Lambi will be the place tonight for one of metal’s most progressive bands when the experimental grind/noise of Rochester’s Psyopus pulls into town. If you are digging the jams of Pig Destroyer, Dillinger Escape Plan and the Locust, you have to go see this musical hydra. Also on the bill will be Ottawa’s pride, Relapse signees Fuck the Facts, with Beneath the Massacre and the Great Sabatini rounding out the bill.

On a completely different tip tonight is Mia Verko at Café Chaos with Faux Postage. Last week’s show at Quai des Brumes proved Mia Verko are no slouches, and they continue their regional tour with a show at Casa del Popolo next Thursday, Jan. 24.

Vancouver transplants and folky duo OKgiraffe are playing O Patro Vys tonight, but if you miss them, you can check them out at Divan Orange on Saturday night when they host a “moustache party” along with the Winks and the Unsettlers. Potential audience members are encouraged to grow, groom and crop a cookie duster for the show, but considering it’s only two days away, puberty ’staches will also be accepted. If you are unable to harvest any peach fuzz under your nose, not to worry—the organizers encourage you to fashion a Fu Manchu, Dirty Sanchez or GG Allin out of whatever you have hanging around the house. The mustachioed will pay a measly $5 to get in, while the clean-shaven wet blankets will be penalized with a whopping $7 tax.

On Friday night, things heat up when New York’s sleaziest, L.E.S. Stitches (featuring members of U.S. Bombs and hometowners Jerk Appeal) play Katacombes with Hypnophonics and the Head Shrinker. Also on Friday night, local legend and caffeine addict Sam Shalabi launches his new solo record Eid at Casa del Popolo with noiseniks Ghost Limbs.

On Saturday night, the only place you should be is in the cutesy confines of Théâtre Ste-Catherine, when CPC Gangbangs illustrate why they are one of the best rock ’n’ roll bands in the city. Making this night extra rad is the return of the Nymphets, who recently hightailed it out of town and put down stakes in New York City. Opening the night will be Boston’s

Hospital Rats. If you didn’t grab any of the 50 pre-show tickets that were made available, better get down there early as this is sure to be sold out.

Finally, fans of goth metal are summoned to the Trail of Tears show at Foufounes Électriques on Wednesday, with the melodic power metal of Cellador and the incredibly twisted sounds of Unexpect opening up.
