Oxnard, California MC Wildchild comes back with Jack of All Trades, an album that brings new life to his veteran flow and packs in beats care of his Oxnard neighbours Madlib (his fellow Lootpack alumnus) and Oh No, plus cameos by Masta Ace, Percee P, MC Lyte and more. Taking a break from Stones Throw to step out on Fat Beats, he’s already proved he’s far from done, and now hits the road, igniting the expectations of bored backpackers everywhere. The Mirror reached Wildchild by phone at his home in Oxnard. Mirror: Are you the type to jump on the New Years resolutions bandwagon, or did you already have a plan before 2008 came into play? Wildchild: I did have a plan before New Years. That’s how the whole album title came about. I just wanted to try and incorporate new things into my life. I don’t play any instruments, but I just started learning congas, for example. I never really got into DJing, but I’ve been DJing for the past year. I always had the ear for making beats, but never put my money into the equipment, so I even produced some of the bonus cuts on the record. I just want to do a little bit of everything. M: It seems like it’s a necessity to be a jack of all trades in the music biz these days. WC: Yep. But I still want to have fun with this. You’ve got to be on top of things, but the business can’t rule everything. When I travel, I try to treat it just like the fun we had when we were doing Lootpack shows. You have to keep the fun, or it turns into showing up to pick up a paycheque, and then you probably wouldn’t hear from me. M: Is Lootpack done and done, man, or are we in for some kind of reunion down the road? WC: I’m almost at the point where I want to keep it a surprise. If it ever gets done, it will not be done the same way it was when we were all living together. As it stands, I have to submit music to Stones Throw just like everybody else, so I might be handing mad a cappellas to Madlib and letting him do his thing, y’know?
