It’s Bob Dylan week! Todd Haynes’s experimental biopic I’m Not There opens tomorrow, and by the time you read this, you will no doubt have heard a lot about it. I’m going to do my part here by offering a smattering of interesting Dylan songs and covers. I offer you the Drive-by Truckers’ “Like a Rolling Stone” (tinyurl.com/ynryxh), Pearl Jam’s “Masters of War” (tinyurl.com/2ffc9g—this kinda sucks, actually, but I include it for interest’s sake), the White Stripes’ “One More Cup of Coffee for the Road” (tinyurl.com/yub78c), Mojave 3 doing “Girl From the North Country” (tinyurl.com/24fffz) and M. Ward, Conor Oberst and Jim James singing it too (tinyurl.com/22zz8l), Cat Power’s “Oh Sister” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” (tinyurl.com/24p2jh), Stephen Malkmus & the Million Dollar Bashers’ “Ballad of a Thin Man” (tinyurl.com/2vagnj), Sufjan Stevens’s “Ring Them Bells” (tinyurl.com/36gdbk) and Jeff Tweedy’s “Simple Twist of Fate” (tinyurl.com/3y9wea)—the last three from the movie’s official soundtrack. From the man himself, check out “Talking World War III Blues” (tinyurl.com/2s8ae7), “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” (tinyurl.com/3xzrot), “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again” (tinyurl.com/yotjhb), “Subterranean Homesick Blues” (tinyurl.com/yul88y), “The Times They Are A-Changin’” (tinyurl.com/yutu38), “Blowing in the Wind” live in 1963 (tinyurl.com/2pzmbn), “Bob Dylan’s Dream” recorded in NYC, also in ’63 (tinyurl.com/3yvmvd), “Masters of War” (tinyurl.com/33m7hh), “With God On Our Side” (tinyurl.com/2mlxqu), “You Are My Sunshine” as sung with Johnny Cash (tinyurl.com/3xff3y) and “Ballad of a Thin Man” (tinyurl.com/2o62s7). And of course, no list is complete without “Like a Rolling Stone.” This version is live, the one with the guy yelling “Judas!” You can distinctly hear Dylan say to the band just before they start, “Play it fucking loud” (tinyurl.com/39hn89).
