In the wake of last month’s murder of South African reggae star Lucky Dube, who was sadly shot in front of his own children during a botched carjacking in Africa, Montreal’s House of Reggae (1693A St-Denis) has some plans to pay homage to South Africa’s longtime international ambassador of positivity. On Saturday, Nov. 17, Kali (of Kali and Dub fame) will take the stage with some friends for a free tribute to Lucky, where they’ll celebrate his contribution to reggae music. Don’t forget, things like jerk chicken, kingfish, red snapper, rotis, Caribbean soup, rum cake and banana bread are always readily available at the House of Reggae, where you can also catch the Uprising Band performing free of charge this Friday, Nov. 9.

Fans of DJ Vadim should know that the king of Russian percussion will be in town for a show at la Sala Rossa on Nov. 10. He’ll be joined by One Self MC Yarah Bravo and the legendary Abstract Rude for your Saturday night helping of leftfieldhip hop.

The mighty Fredy V and his band Black Soil are back at it with a show scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15 at Boodah Bar. This Kalmunity family-tree offshoot will present some new songs alongside older tunes in funky, soulful style. The show starts at 8:30 p.m., and $8 gets you in.

As I mentioned last week, Boot Camp Clik should be in Montreal for a show on Nov. 22, but did you know that Chamillionaire is also set to touch down for a show in MTL, on Nov. 30? Looking even further ahead, Guru is supporting his latest Jazzmatazz release with a tour that will hit Montreal on Dec. 2, and I bet you’re as interested as the rest of us as to who will be supporting him on that bill. Who knows, maybe Bless will jump onstage and do some hometown hits with the voice.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, CKUT 90.3FM celebrates “20 years between your ears!” with a party at la Sala Rossa, with Tashish, Andy Williams, WeFunk and Microtone Kitchen. Also performing are trumpeter Sean Winters and pianist David Ryshpan, who’ve put together the Phazz Eujorium Big Band featuring some notable Montreal musicians. The tax is only $5 at the door, with Tash starting the party off at 9 p.m.

Just in case you forgot, the fiery funk and soul of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings return to Montreal for a show at la Tulipe on Sunday, Nov. 11. This time the venue is bigger, but if you’ve seen Sharon Jones live in the past, you know she could blow out the Bell Centre if she had to. They’ll be joined by the Budos Band, just to keep things raw.
