BV3-peat!

by SCOTT C

A few notable locals are making the moves to get their music to the people lately, with O.L.1.K.U. dropping his brand new solo LP, La Distance, this week. It features production from a wide variety of talents, including Ray Ray (les Architekts) and DJ Choice (Dubmatique). OL also shares the mic with Dee (Atach Tatuq), Paul Cargnello and Frenchi Blanco for starters, so pick it up to see just what he’s been up to.

DJ 7D is a busy guy these days. While wrapping up the finishing touches on Monk.e’s new album, Entre Mehktoub & Self-Destruction, he’s also cranking out an instrumental jazz album that will see the light of day very soon. Add a James Brown tribute record called Hot Pants: A James Brown Dedication to the mix as well, due out Dec. 7, just in time for the holidays. But for now, he’s just dropped UNI vs. City’s The Nature of Things, an LP that was recorded back in 2003 featuring then-14-year-old female MC Vanessa Barkley, True82 and 12th Poet.

After grinding forever on his own independent journey, Ghislain Poirier steps out big with the launch of No Ground Under, being released on Ninja Tune Thursday, Nov. 1. Big Ghis performs at his launch party at la Tulipe on that very same date with drummer Christian Olsen and MCs Face-T, Abdominal, Zulu, Omnikrom and Nik Myo. The doors open at 7:30 p.m., and tix are $15.

Now, I was talking to my old friend Dave Hodge a few months back on iChat, and although he now runs a studio down in Cali, he was a floating member of Bran Van 3000 playing (ahem) trombone and percussion. I joked with him about Bran Van making a comeback on the heels of all the international hype around homegrown MTL bands, and he said it was in the cards. I didn’t believe him. Anyways, Bran Van 3000’s new album, Rosé, will hit the shelves on Oct. 29. It’s their first album in seven years and was recorded in Santa Barbara, Hollywood and Los Vegas. Fans will be happy to know that the dream team of James Di Salvio, Sara Johnston, Gary Mckenzie, Nick Hynes, Rob Joanisse, Jayne Hill, Stephane Moraille and Liquid have all reunited to make this hip hop, electro and R&B project happen.

Daddy/DJ Maysr is making a brand new flex every Sunday night at the new Kops Crew spot Sing Sing (77 des Pins E.), where he’ll be throwing down nothing but reggae all night long, every weekend. The fact that it’s a free-for-all is pretty good news too.

Seven reasons you must bow to the true Turf One:
1. Monk.e “Souvenir de mon Futur” (CDR)
2. Flying Lotus “Massage Situation” (Warp)
3. Simbad ft. Lisa M “Brukeaton” (Key)
4. Daz-I-Kue ft. Blue James “Think 2007” (CDR)
5. Beat Conductor “Sumthin Betta” (GAMM)
6. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings “Nobody’s Baby” (Daptone)
7. The Pumpkin Pie Players “Socainyabati” (CDR)
