Bass mafia

by SCOTT C

I’m happy to see a united front ganging up this month with the sole aim of vibrating people’s insides all night long. On Saturday, Oct. 27, Komodo Dubs, the Montreal Sub Syndicate and Nice Music present Stop the War on Vinyl, where several of the city’s bass music DJs will all get together to welcome two of the world’s hottest dubstep selectors to Montreal for a serious all-nighter. The Montreal home team of Komodo, DJ Hosta, Sase One, Jack, Mofomatronix, Kiffah, Intoccabile, Sweet Daddy Luv, Little Thunder and Rhys Taylor will open every possible gateway to the wobble zone before U.K. hotsteppers Hatcha and Benga tear up the place. This 8 p.m.–9 a.m. party goes down at 435 Beaubien W., 4th floor, which also happens to be the Nice Music vinyl warehouse. Not only have they got 10 tons (!!) of vinyl that will be on sale during the night, they’re also bringing in Piknic Électronik’s 10,000-watt sound system to make sure your intestines tremble with the proper intensity. The first 50 tickets are only $8 and are available at Nice, the rest are $12.50 in advance and a little more at the door. You can get them at Jamcan (4541 St-Laurent), Moog (3828 St-Laurent) and Off the Hook (1021 Ste-Catherine W.).

The folks at Get Yo Freak On Thursdays at Jello Bar are set to throw the jam of all jams for DJoolz and DJ Twitch’s birthdays tonight, Thursday, Oct. 18. Along with DJ Sagewondah and DJ Truspin, these guys hold it down every week with all flavours of boom-bap, so try to represent. Very special b-day wishes also go out to Caro de Monaco, who will also be celebrating her born day with these guys tonight. Happy birthday, all of you!

This Friday, Café de Lima officially launches a night that’s been bubbling for several weeks, aimed at developing the artform of house dance. More than just another club night, the One Spirit Underground collective of DJs and dance professionals will provide a weekly journey into the soulful heart of house, complete with dance workshops with the Sessionists, Dazl St-Louis and Marvin Baptiste. DJs Don Barbarino, Miss Molly, DJ A.Soul and Michael Terzian will all be on hand this Friday, with a one-hour dance workshop at 10 p.m. If you’ve always wanted a little dancefloor direction, or you just like to move, period, this might be for you. Five bucks get you in. Call (514) 282-8777 for more information.

Don’t forget the Goods this Saturday at la Sala Rossa, where Los Angeles producer/composer/DJ Carlos Nino makes his first ever Montreal appearance. Nino is responsible for a number of ambitious music projects like Ammoncontact, Build an Ark and the Life Force Trio, not to mention the Sound of L.A. 12-inch series, featuring the tight-knit community of rising hip hop producers based in Los Angeles, like Flying Lotus, Nobody, Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Should be a sweet night. Tix are $10 at the door.
