The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

The 2007 edition of Pop Montreal is in full swing. Here’s some stuff to check out:

Zoobombs: This will be really good. From Tokyo, the Zoobombs don’t speak much English, but play high-energy rock of the variety that oversteps linguistic barriers. “Highway A Go Go” is available at tinyurl.com/2zvw68. They play at the Academy Club Friday, and le Divan Orange Saturday afternoon.

Eric’s Trip: A touchstone of the Canadian East Coast indie rock scene of the early ’90s, Eric’s Trip have been occasionally reuniting for one-off tours since their break-up 10 years ago. By all reports, the Moncton natives have been pretty into it this tour, prompting grins all around from the bitter, 30-year-old hipsters in attendance. “Follow” is at tinyurl.com/2p2njq, and “Belong” is at tinyurl.com/3x4vsv. At the Ukrainian Federation on Sunday.

Grizzly Bear: This band plays slow, atmospheric, folky kind of stuff that makes you feel like you’re being wrapped up, appropriate for the seated setting at the Ukrainian Federation. When you add opener Plants and Animals, locals who sometimes sound like a faster Luna with a little less lushness (they say “post-classic rock”), this show is a sure thing. Grizzly Bear’s “Easier” is at tinyurl.com/2w4s7o, and “Feedback in the Field,” by Plants and Animals, is at tinyurl.com/2nxptz. At the Ukrainian Federation on Friday.

The Brother Kite: Ah, shoegaze—a genre well past its heyday, but never short of adherents. The Brother Kite perform it perfectly, with the quiet and loud parts in all the right places. Here’s a link to the track “Get on Me”: tinyurl.com/32nbxq. At the le Gymnase tonight (Thursday).

The National: The National’s knack for writing melodic pop with complex foundations has been bringing them big-time success lately, as their quick steps up the Montreal venue ladder — their last shows here were at Main Hall, then Cabaret, and now le National—can attest. Here’s “Fake Empire”: tinyurl.com/2w8kbo. “Secret Meeting,” live in Paris, is at tinyurl.com/2v9n6q.
