America’s tackiest mayor
|
When Rudy Giuliani lies in bed at night, distractedly poking at his treatment-weary prostate, he must envision the perfect presidential campaign photo-op as being him kissing a baby with the tail of a passenger plane jutting from a burning hole in the side of its head while terrified office clerks leap from its eyes. At least for now, though, Rudy seems content to exploit the September 11, 2001, attacks for only personal gain—as can be deduced from a campaign fundraiser with an entry fee of a tasteless $9.11. Held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Palo Alto, California, home of Giuliani’s long-time pal Abraham Sofaer, the “national house party night” is described on its invitations as being an “independent, non-denominational grass-roots campaign to raise $10,000 in small increments to show how many individual, everyday Americans support ‘America’s Mayor.’” Sofaer attributes the idea of the $9.11 cover fee to “some young people,” while the Giuliani hive denies having known about it until it was too late. Exactly how a “$9.11 for Rudy” themed event, with Rudy speaking via live Web cast, went under their radar was not explained. by Scott Saxon |
