That back to
school money...

by SCOTT C

This week, some of us are gettin’ old, namely the one and only DJ Blast. In honour of DJ Blast’s Birthday Bash, Don Blasto teams up with Godfather D and his night Chillincypherisms at Lola Lounge to ring this guy’s bell right. We’re talkin’ about two of Montreal’s best-loved hip hop DJs doing their thing all night long. If you’ve already gone out and bought a gift for Blast, just bring it to the club and take it straight to the booth. He’ll sort you out. Happy birthday man!

I was happy to see that microphone master Talib Kweli is making another trip to Montreal just in time for back to school. He’ll be riding the momentum of his latest LP, Eardrum, that features production from Madlib, Will.I.Am, Pete Rock, Just Blaze, Hi-Tek, DJ Khalil, Battlecat and even Justin Timberlake. He plays Metropolis on Saturday, Sept. 1, with support from DJ Chaps. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

The Roots roll up about a week later with a show on Sept. 7 at Metropolis as well. Is it me, or are these guys cashing in on the back to school crowd? The Roots hit you up for $36 a ticket, and no, that does not include what you will probably end up paying to see ?uestlove DJ a little later on that same evening. The Beastie Boys get in on it big time too, with two shows at two different Montreal venues, two nights in a row. You can check out the instrumental incarnation of the BB’s on Sept. 19 at Metropolis for $40, or you can check out classic microphone-grabbin’ Beastie Boys at the Bell Centre on Sept. 20, when they share the stage with, wait for it...Chromeo. Start saving for September now, people.

The post-punk presence of Professor Murder works the room at Club Lambi this Thursday night, with a show that will surely attract a lot of attention from Montrealers in love with their sound. Locals DJs Lynne T, and the Masala Radio Show team of Khiasma & Masala will not only start you off, but finish you off as well. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $12 at the door, and available at Cheap Thrills, Atom Heart and L’Oblique.

Last week, Concordia’s CJLO 1690 caught an unnecessary beating in this very column, but I’m here now with the correct information. CJLO is not on the AM dial as of yet, but should be up and running sometime in mid-fall. You can still check out all they have to offer at www.cjlo.com for now. Sorry Katie.
