R.I.P. Joe BG

by SCOTT C

Following the sad passing of Montreal rapper and 13Deep artist Joe BG in an apartment fire on July 27, some of his friends and fellow artists in the city’s hip hop community have joined forces to hold a tribute concert at Club Soda on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Tragically, Aug. 21 was also the date Joe was scheduled to release his brand new album, and thanks to 13Deep, that release date will be honoured. This launch party and benefit will feature names like Sans

Pression, Cobna, Imposs, Radical, Taktika, Dramatik, Dupuis, Criollo, L’Assemblée, Cyrano de Montréal et Negsayo, Manu Militari, Sir Pathetik et Billy Nova, Sacha Zahabi, Tammy-X, Chub-E Pelletier, Seice, le Lunatique, Ruffneck, Buzzy Bwoy and even more, set to grab the mic on this very special night. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, which opens at 7:30 p.m. leading up to an 8:30 show. All proceeds from the show will go directly to Jonathan Beaupré Guilbeault’s mother.

This Saturday, Aug. 18, West Island beatsmith Sikh Knowledge gets set to release the first LP on his own label, The Bank of Mount Real, with a party at l’Alizé. The album, Nu High, is produced by Sikh and features the lyrical talents of local MC Lotus. These two will be performing a few tracks from the release starting at 10 p.m., followed by a quick descent into a night of serious redemptmenti. DJs Mr. Goodvibes, Sikh and Think Twice will be spinning the best in dancehall, hip hop and crunk, in the spirit of their annual Bashmenti Vibes throwdown. At the same time, Concordia’s CJLO radio will be celebrating the fact that they are now on 1690AM radio, after having only been available online for quite some time. Tix are $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Make sure you pick up the LP, on sale for your listening pleasure the night of the event, or the first single, “Feels Right/Take It to the...” which will be available on iTunes as of August 24.

Also this Saturday, Aug. 18, Montreal reggae band Deya hits the stage at Divan Orange for a show, where they’ll share the bill with the RiddimWise Sound System. Deya has been around for almost 10 years, and perform songs in French, English, Haitian Creole and Brazilian Portuguese. You might recognize singer Nik Myo from the Ghislain Poirier-produced “Pou Ki Sa Dub,” recently licensed to Toronto’s Do Right Records. The show starts at 10 p.m.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has ever come out to support The Goods each and every month at Sala Rossa, and invite you to come down this Saturday, Aug. 18 to help us celebrate our five-year anniversary. What better way to mark five years strong than to have broken-beat don Daz-I-Kue from Bugz in the Attic come all the way from London-town and bless the place? You can also count on myself and Andy Williams to man the decks, live art from HVW8’s Gene Starship, visuals by Po’Start, plus a few surprises for the evening. Tix are $12 at the door, no frills.

Lastly, don’t forget to check out the East Coast Overdose Tour featuring Stink Mitt vs. Calgary’s Smalltown DJs at Club Lambi tonight, Aug. 16. If you’re digging that spunky, sex-laden, headbanger-hip hop shit, then this is definitely the gig for you.
