Connect the dots

by SCOTT C

Got a note from my man Miles Moore about a new night he’s doing at a beautiful new spot called Codebar (1351 Rachel E., at the corner of de Lanaudière). He’ll be in there Tuesdays and Fridays every week, playing an eclectic mix of leftfield vibes. Codebar is also perfect for your upcoming vernissage or exhibition. Take a minute and check out the stush interior at www.codebar.ca, or make your way down this week for a peek.

Odessa “Queen” Thornhill spreads her wings once again this week with a big show called the Session, over at Zanzibar tonight, Thursday, July 19. Backed by Kalmunity staples Jah-Sun (drums), J-F Hamel (guitar) and Patrice Agboukou (bass), Queen has also invited Zibz Black Current, Foblaze and Blu Rva to share the stage with her tonight. Tix are $10, with doors at 8:30 p.m. and show at 9:30 p.m.

Looking down the road, Saints Showbar welcomes Planet Asia on July 27 for a show promoting his new LP, Jewellery Box Sessions. He’ll be joined by Winnipeg’s Grand Analog, who drop their new release Calligraffiti this week on Toronto’s Urbnet Records. Also on the bill are performances from Mugz, Clermont and Dialekt, with DJ support from Red Dredd, Hurricane and DG. Tix are $10 in advance and $14 at the door.

In the WTF department, my good friend and new enemy DJ Huggs has pulled his magic strings once again and has somehow scooped an opening spot DJing before the Police at the Bell Centre on both July 25 and 26. Huggs, if you ask me nicely, I will permanently remove the horseshoe from your ass, and replace it with my foot. It would be my pleasure.

The ICM Records Heads Connect concert series continues on Saturday, July 21, with another show at les Minots (3812 St-Laurent) featuring ICM, Rhythmicru, Annakin Slayd. You can get in for $8, or pay the $12 for a CD and admission. Check out www.islandcitymonsters.com for more info. DJ Manzo and Naej keep on trucking with their Good Vibes night at l’Inspecteur Epingle, with a birthday bash for Naej, Astro and Unknown Girl on Friday, July 20, at 10 p.m. These guys hold it down every Friday, and this one should be one to remember, so check it out.

Seven reasons if I concentrate, I’m okay:
1. Dessy Dilauro “Where is the Light” Incubator remix demo (CDR)
2. Amerythmes Âme et Rythme (independent)
3. The Politik “Moonlight” feat. Blu (Antipodean)
4. Matthew Larkin Cassell “In My Life” (BBE)
5. The Slapped Eyeballers “Rede Het Sie Gseit” November Version (Sonar Kollektiv)
6. LL Cool J “Mama Said Knock You Out” (Def Jam)
7. Ice-T “High Rollers” (Rhyme Syndicate)
