Think DMC...

This week, Moonstarr and the Public Transit Recordings crew call a huddle to celebrate the makeover that their Web site has undergone, as well as alert the people to some new musical movements happening under the PTR umbrella. Tonight, Thursday, June 28 at Academy, you can check out the hip hop sounds of Think Twice and Coates, Karma & Lotus with Mr. Goodvibes, and me backing up Narcicyst and Butta Beats. DJ Tashish and Moonstarr will hold down the tunes once you’re inside the place, and admission is a suggested donation of between $3 and $10, with all proceeds going to the Native Friendship Centre.

On Saturday is this year’s installment of the DMC Montreal DJ Mixing Championships, happening down at the Saints Showbar. Slated to do a showcase of legendary proportions is World Famous Beat Junkies/Invisibl Skratch Piklz member D-Styles, as well as a special set from 2003–2004 DMC winner DJ Mana. DJ Static and Manzo will warm up the place with classic tracks from the archives, but you probably want to know just who in Montreal has stepped up to the plate for a DMC title in 2007. There are all of eight DJs competing in this year’s DMC competition; Daywalker, E-Flip, Free, DJiRATE, Dirty Wife Beater, So Nice, TLO and Wilson Hart, while DJs who still wish to compete are invited to log onto www.dmc-quebec.com. I should mention that tickets to this Saturday’s show are only $9.99 and available through Admission.

If you’ve got a hankering for a 10-piece live disco outfit, Airport 77 will not disappoint as far as authenticity is concerned. Check out the sounds of their vocal powerhouse, made up of singers Whista Jean, Angela Burton, Randi Katz and Tony Picciuto, who’ll be keeping the grooves alive this Friday at Jello Bar as of 10:30 p.m.

Make some room for Leon Louder and Gene Farris this Friday at Salon Daomé, as Uzi & Natacha and the Soulmeka crew present what will no doubt be a great night of house music. Local head Louder has been making his own moves with a growing list of 12-inch releases, so show some love and support our local guy in the mix. Farris, on the other hand, is one of Chicago’s international ambassadors of house music, and I’m sure he’ll live up to that title as soon as he hits the decks. He’s promoting a new CD called A Decade of Beats, showcasing some of his best productions over his 12-year stint in the game. Don’t miss this one.
