The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

Wheeeee! I’ve been having a lot of fun lately with www.coverville.com, a Web site and podcast devoted entirely to covers. The show is a little over a half-hour long, and is podcast three times a week from the Colorado home of Brian Ibbott, who’s pretty hilarious to listen to—the guy has an earnestness that I imagine can only come from someone over 50 living in Denver. It’s impressively eclectic, with shows being sometimes theme-based and other times random, and always featuring plenty of listener requests.

As of this writing, the most recent episode has a bizarre, elevator-music cover of “Hey Ya” by edibleRed, and a goth-death version of “Like a Prayer” by Bigod 20. An earlier episode has a great cover of the Kinks’ “Everybody’s Gonna be Happy” by Queens of the Stone Age, and there’s an entire episode devoted to covers of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s, in order (including “With a Little Help From My Friends” by Santana). Great stuff, if you want something a little different.

Locals Megasoid, fresh from the fantastic St-Viateur street festival bridge burner, bring their self-described turbo-crunk to Zoobizarre this Saturday. Expect a very danceable live set, and a great time if you’re not afraid of crowds and small spaces. To get an idea, some videos will have to suffice, as they’re not MP3 types: tinyurl.com/3xzaf4, tinyurl.com/32suxj.

You may remember ages ago that I wrote about a blog called Communications Major/English Minor. It’s recently been rechristened Swan Fungus (blog.swanfungus.com) and the Sunday MP3 mixtape posted each week is still going strong. Be sure to visit it this week (before Sunday) to get at the current one, which has tracks by Nina Simone, Spiritualized, Don Caballero, Miles Davis, the Jesus and Mary Chain and a bunch of others. It’s a good mixtape.

And finally, Vice Magazine, clever marketers that they are, have provided me, and thus you, with an exclusive download of an hour-long dancehall mix featuring all the artists on the Jamaica series on VBS.TV. Download it here: tinyurl.com/38u2jk.

Steak. It’s what’s for dinner… ssinnott@gmail.com
